Howdy Smiley

I have a Brother NS-30, love it to bits. Except for one thing that has me a little bit boggled. I can sew buttonholes fine, not a problem there, but the buttons themselves is a bit of a pain. I do everything that the manual tells me to, including the correct stitch. It also tells me,

"The sewing machine automatically stops after sewing reinforcement stitches."

Except my problem is that it doesn't! When sewing buttonholes it automatically stops but it just does not if I'm sewing on a button. Which is becoming a little bit frustrating. I could keep my foot down for ages and it still keeps sewing, and not stopping. My buttons then seem to refuse to stay on.

I'm using the button foot, I'm using the stitch the manual tells me to, feed dogs are dropped, needle is aligned to the button, why is it not automatically stopping?!
