Ugh. So you all may or may not know that when spammers and virus senders send emails they can FAKE the "return address" to make it look like it's coming from someone it's not.

I just found out that a whole slew of emails are going around claiming to be from register@craftster.org with the subject:

Subject: Registration Confirmation

and this message:

Account and Password Information are attached!
Visit: http://www.craftster.org

And then there's an attachment.  No doubt with a virus.

So evil!!  Please be careful and delete this if you get it!!

Edited this message to say that I'm noticing more and more of these! And some of them are worded in a such a way that it really would be convincing to think it came from Craftster!!  Here's one I just got today:

Dear user jose,

It has come to our attention that your Craftster User Profile ( x ) records are out of date. For further details see the attached document.

Thank you for using Craftster!
The Craftster Support Team

So please be careful!  I don't send out mass emails and I especially don't send email attachments!

I don't think that these email can harm you as long as you don't open the attachment.

That's so sad! Is it suspected to be a craftster member doing this?
We're family here and it hurts that someone would send viruses using the family name.

Nah.  I don't think it's any member of Craftster.  These things are all computerized in the sense that some computer program just grabs an email address and starts using it.  This particular one is just a little smarter than normal because it phrases itself in a way that would really make you think you should open it!

somebody once did that with my email account. at first I thought they had hacked in, but I notified the company and they said the spammers were making it look like it was from me and there was nothing they could do about it. I got a lot of nasty emails.

Yeah. They are so evil and so sneaky. I just can't understand for the life of me why email protocol allows for people to fake the return address!

They're not just using the Craftster name.  I have gotten a bunch of e-mail from different places like that.  A few of them even made it to my inbox and not my junk mail!

I got one in my Yahoo BULK mail that was supposedly from "Support" at Yahoo stating a trojan had grabbed my yahoo address and was sending out spam in my name. It came with an exe file to "fix" the situation. I deleted it.

Be very careful if you are collecting birthday gifs to post greetings to friends. One page I came across did have a trojan installed in the music file that ran in the background. My virus protection caught it and cleaned it immediately.

I also got the Yahoo spam, and deleted it...just something not right about it. I got something from Paypal too that looked JUST like paypal and took me to a site wanting to update my visa info - whoa. Sniffed that one out just before I made a HUGE mistake!
If those people who spend so much time, smarts and energy doing this kind of crap would use it to a good end the internet would be a far better place, and they might actually make some honest money.

The Paypal one is a bugger, too. Hard not to fall for that one if you use Paypal, and we do a lot.

Bunny, that's so true! How about those really nasty viruses, that have no purpose besides randomly blasting computers dead? When I lamented once to Hubby, "Why do they do it???!!"

He shrugged and said, "Cause they can."

Yeah, I hate people who create viruses. Angry

I got some phony yahoo email that said my account had been terminated and to see the attachment about further security information...or something like that

don't think i even noticed the attachment before.  if you think about it for a sec: why would yahoo send me a 44k attachment telling me about security? they wouldnt.

Its sad that now people are doing that crap with craftster.  Cry

I've seen the paypal one, it's evil! It says something along the lines of "We need you to update your information" and then asks for your credit card number and such. I'll have to keep a look out for craftster ones, though I hope I don't get any since I've hidden my email address.

The paypal one also comes under a warning of  bad transactions and security violations! I just deleted one of those in yahoo. They'll do anything to get you to answer. My hubby is the really careful one, and the other day we got an addressed from an car financing outfit. It looked pretty real, but I wondered about it. As we've purchased a car recently, he opened it.

Just opening it gave us a trojan, which McCaffee immediately caught, isolated, and cleaned. We did the suggested scan through all files to make sure.

Sad that it has hit craftster, too. I'm grateful for the warning, because I'd never suspect it was a phish.  Undecided

There are always viruses like these for every community growing big. They (hackers, scriptkiddies and others..)  just send out spiders and gather addresses, automatic e-mailing with some obviouslike name like webmaster@[currentdomain] or something... I've been getting a load of them from "paypal" recently. And I don't even have a paypal account! But that one is even more suspicious 'cause it says "go to [ip-address] to update your info", and why would paypal ever use a direct ip-adress...
Anyways.

Oh yeah! This reminds me ... you should all go to your Profile screen on Craftster and choose to HIDE your email address so no one can get to it.
