Hi all,

I just bought my first crochet hook and a book to teach myself how to crochet. However, I'm wondering what kind of wool/yarn to get? Is there a better type for beginners?

Any help/suggestions are muchly welcomed!

When i was learning to knit, i found that no-frills sturdy yarn was the best for learning. So nothing from the clearance bin. I'd also steer clear of Mixed fibers for the time being.
Basically use something you aren't afraid of making a crap project out of, but not out of crappy yarn.

what size crochet hook did you get? Different yarn/wool thickness uses different size hooks to work up successfully.
I find that teaching with a 8-ply (light worsted) and a 4-5mm (G or H) hook works well.

I learned with an I hook and redheart super saver.  worsted weight yarn makes it easy to see stitches better for beginners, in my opinion anyway

ditto to what everyone else has said.  I retaught myself with an H hook and Red Heart Super Saver (grandmother had previously taught me a bazillion years ago).  RHSS is inexpensive but you can still make a ton of awesome things with it.  It is a worsted acrylic

Since my girls actually nap (knock on wood), I am going to start trying to work off my negative feedback.  Life got hectic with their early arrival.  I apologize for the inconveniences my flaking caused.

I also think using a light colored yarn is really good for beginning, it is much easier to see your stitches that way.

All of the above, but also something you really like.  When I started, if it wasn't a yarn I liked, then I didn't want to do it.  Why would I want to spend time staring at and using a color/yarn I didn't love?  It just made learning that much harder.

I agree with ademareej,
if you don't like the yarn, don't buy it then it'd be a waste but I wouldn't spend 6 dollars on a skein of yarn for your first project
