Okay so I've sat here for awhile admiring all your work and been wondering if i should post my first attempt at this embroidery stuff tonight so here goes *deep breath*
I got one of the SS kits and decided to sit down with a movie and just try one section of my soon to be doodled all over pillowcase.
Gosh, I started out with split stitch, then went on to back stitch, then tried chain and had an utter fail and tried to recover and then tried a stem stitch which looks really weird...oh and a satin one too which I found to be easiest for me. I had no plans for what stitch where, I just basically wanted to learn as much as I could as fast as I can and kind of had an ADD episode as I was doing it Wink

I'm gonna go back and add more of the Kurt Halsey patterns to the pillowcase (this is just one corner). My hope is as I move throughout the pillowcase the stitching will get better but I wanted to document my first official try. Please be gentle with me Cheesy

Thank you! Cheesy I've started another area of the pillowcase with the angel and now I'm noticing my stitches are not so clean, just figuring out how to move around a pattern and such. I did some lettering though that I enjoyed. Think I'll post when I'm all done with my "practice pillowcase" and you can prob see the learning curve, LOL! I really love doing it though! Smiley

That looks really great! Your satin stitch is so clean.  I think you may have your fabric hooped wrong though (the inside of the hoop should be at the back of your fabric so you have something to hold onto), but if it's working for you then keep going!  I look forward to seeing the progress!

Don't be so hard on yourself.  I think it looks great.  I've always found stem stitch to be a little tricky on small designs and usually reserve it for longer lines.  Backstitch is probably easiest for little things like your stars.  Your satin stitch is fantastic...that's one that a lot of us have a hard time with.  Keeping your pillowcase as a record of your progress as an embroiderer is a great idea.  I say you are off to a wonderful start! I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Aww thanks for the encouragement! I started experimenting and yes longer lines it's much easier! I noticed though I got lazy and it doesn't look completely connected, I won't make that mistake again (I hope!). Also I think I spoke too quickly about the satin. Turns out something like a wing is easy but a shape like a heart came out so much more messy and I am terrified to even try a star, LOL! I don't know if this is okay but here's what I mean..
(attempt two)

see how on the hair i started realizing i needed to make longer lines?

but there's spaces..argh, that bothers me!

i started the bird last night with a split stitch and had that whole epiphany about the hoop and it was so much easier. bad part is that i kind of went crazy when i got the package and just started playing with the patterns and the iron on the pillowcase without pinning or being careful and there's lots of mirroring and not so clean lines so now i find myself doing some guesswork with a ball point pen before i continue Roll Eyes another lesson learned Cheesy

well i did this tonight. you can see my issue with the messup of imaging cuz i was messy with the iron on..oh well, thought i'd stitch it up anyway. it's just going to be used in my ferret's nursery (yes i have ferrets with their own room called the nursery, i'm kinda fanatical about my furbabies) so it's not like they'll mind anyway. this one i really enjoyed doing even though it's kind of messed up..

*edit* been busy lately but here's my latest stress releasing image added on to the pillowcase 4/21/10
