First attempt at Quilling

This is my first quilling item. I just learned of this paper craft from a wonderful friend and thought I would give it a "twirl".
I don't have all the fancy tools, just paper I cut into strips, good ol' school glue, and I used a bobby pin to roll the paper strips. The bobby pin worked well because It "holds" the beginning of the paper roll and then I slid it off and continued to roll freehand.

Since I'm  new to the craft any tips, tricks or suggestions would greatly be appreciated!

 I have it on my list of things to try this year, so I don't have any advice for you, just some encouragement.

Looks like you're off to a great start.  I got through one section and was distracted by my sewing machine, never to return. 
I don't know about tips or books, but I have seen a number of short tutorials and projects around the internet and craft blogs, so there is stuff out there for free to get you going.

Hi, your first work looks great. I think you might have been very proud of it, because it's also my feeling when I did it first time (few months ago ).

I also use just my toothpick to scroll the strips, and also cut my paper into strips manually too T__T I cannot find the place to buy the tools at my place

You can find more templates to practice by searching on YouTube, there are lots of videos teach you how to do. Or Googling, find a crafts forums, etc., maybe you can find a free ebook for downloading

you did this with a bobby pin?? I am totally impressed. I love quilling- this Christmas I made my whole family snowflakes upon snow flakes upon snow flakes....they loved it and I was addicted.

I used a toothpick for about the first few months and then went to Michael's and upgraded to a real quilling tool. It will change your quilling life. One thing you don't need for sure are the silly little scissors they try to sell you with the quilling tool- don't buy them...

also.... I get all my paper from Whimsiquills.com... it's so cheap
