Don't be a soap licker

View Profile WWW
« on: March 29, 2010 02:33:34 AM »

I discovered a couple week ago that I was almost out of soap! Gasp! What am I going to put into swap packages as extras? What am I going to use for hostess gifts? What am I going to...you know...wash with?

So I made 8 batches of soap over the course of two days last week. Afterward I was tired, and my house smelled strongly of a variety of scents. But my soap rack is now full and happy. Or fat and happy, something like that.

Lately I've been soaping more unscented and essential oil soaps, whereas I used to be an almost exclusively fragrance oil kind of girl. 3 of these 8 batches had fragrance oil, 1 was unscented, and the other (crap, time for math)....other 4 batches had essential oils in them.

Here are the 3 FO batches, the others I will post another time, since I forgot to take pics of them all and I am too lazy tired to do that right now.  All of these batches were a basic olive/coconut/vegetable shortening recipe. Simple is good!

Some gratuitous, in-the-mold shots:

Dragon's blood soap! I'm always surprised at how chocolate-y and coffee-y (?) this smells during the cure. If you aren't familiar with it, it has amber, patchouli, and licorice undertones as well. Basically, hippie types like it  Grin Or anyone who likes earthy scents. This discolors like crazy, I'll add more pics later of what it looks like now, which is almost black!

Coconut. So far it is not smelling that coconut-y. I'm crossing my fingers that it will come back during cure, since it smelled amazing in the bottle! I had some issues with this, I got a false trace and had to cook it on the stove for awhile. I had another coconut fail not long ago, so I am thinking me + this fragrance = not meant to be

And the amazing-ness! I am super sad to report that I got this from the Supplier-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named (We'll just call her Voldemort, shall we?) Anyhow this was my favorite fragrance years ago, named Red Tea & Clover. It's kind of sweet, but not too cloying and still has a fresh, clean scent. I stink at describing fragrances. Anyhow, this supplier went out of business and I hadn't been able to find it since! I was really excited to find out that Voldemort had it (slightly re-named), so I ordered 4 ounces. Then I found out that she was pure evil and now I have to find another supplier, but I am sure that's possible (especially with the handy Fragrance Finder!) Ok, Southern Garden Scents has it, and they rock, so I am a happy girl again!

After all that, all I have is this weak-sauce little pic. Sorry.

Oh c'mon Mare, everyone knows hippies don't bathe!

Ahem.   Wink

Oh! Um... how awkward! Grin (<3)

They look great, MareMare, as always. Now I feel so inadequate! I needs to drag my butt down to Federal (read: the ghetto) to get more lye so I can start soapapaloozaing, too! Smiley

Hee.  I'm actually a big fan of dragon's blood, though my FO (BB's--not their Cybilla fragrance) doesn't smell very hippie-ish to me.  It's sweet and musky but floral, almost green.  The BF declared it his favorite soap!

Then again, I do love the patchouli.  Maybe I am just a dirty hippie.  Grin
