Holy Schmidt I'm a featured project!!!!  Shocked
Would you believe this was my first ever Hot Topic?
Thanks everyone.

I am getting married in June. We just bought a house so the wedding will be low key and pretty much all DIY.

Several months ago a couple girlfriends and I had a couple margaritas (each) and went to the Alfred Angelo store to try on dresses. As you will be able to tell from the pics I am curvy. I have pretty broad shoulders a narrowish waist and a big ass. At the store nothing fit right and the only dress that came close was $1200. And really what I liked about that dress was that it was a simple satin. I dont want crinoline or itchy lace or beading that scrapes your arms or a dress that looks anything like a cupcake.

I should also mention that I am really only an intermediate sewer (if that). I can sew a mean apron and potholders but generally I dont sew garments from scratch.

I want my dress to feel like a classy 40s movie star and be comfortable and make me feel pretty. Is that too much to ask? Apparently no.

I found this Vogue pattern # V8358 and was enticed by the label very easy.

And while it was very easy it came out looking like this:
Yuck

The torso was too long as were the straps, and where it fell just wasnt flattering on my curves. I was going to chuck it, but I decided to experiment. And this is what I came up with.

note the big ass (beautiful but big)

I am really very pleased. And it feels so light and airy on. I will probably get those Spanks things just to smooth some stuff out Wink but I do feel pretty in it.

I need to hem it but I will wait till my mom comes to do that (mostly because she will know how). Anyway let me know what you think and if you have any suggestions.
Thanks.

It turned out gorgeous in the end and you look great in it. I'm sure you could find a dress like that for about $1000 or more from someplace specializing in wedding dresses so awesome job!

Beautiful! Being a bigger girl myself (not so much curvy though, it's very unfair!) I'm seriously considering sewing my own dress, so it's always a relief to see another non-seamstress do such a wonderful job!

good for you for altering that nasty pattern to your beautiful dress! When I got married four years ago, my mom made my dress too - and she had to alter the crap out of it - I'm swaybacked, pear shaped, and short. You look beautiful in that dress - and the simplicity of it suits you!

Wow. Thank you everyone for your encouragement. I work really hard on having a positive body image and that has been especially difficult while wedding dress shopping.

Your kind words are really appreciated. I would kiss you all if I could.
