I have the chance to dye a custom skein of self-striping yarn and the customer mentioned they liked the style of jacquard patterning (like this: http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/p_10151_10104_021V001585744000P?vName=For%20the%20Home&cName=CraftSupplies&sName=Knit%20&%20Crochet&psid=FROOGLE&sid=KDx20070926x00003a ... I need to learn how to insert that correctly)

But how do you dye it?  I've never really liked it, so I don't own any that I could take a look at.  I've tried googling it, but even in between all the ads for the acid dyes, I'm still not finding anything.  I think I know how it works, but has anyone done it?

It is a major pain to do without several yards of space to work in and something like a warping board to hold the yarn parallel. The closest I've come to instructions is ikat dyeing tutorials. Maybe if you dye painted a knitted blank (like the commercially available sock blanks)?
