I have decided that my project for the granny squares will be an afghan for my grandmother. she left the state last year for hip surgery and has been in arkansas ever since with my aunt, has not been well enough to travel back, and i miss her tons! I have been wanting to make or get her something, so I think this will be the perfect opprotunity. I wish I could somehow incorporate owls into it though, she loves owls.

maybe you can make an owl applique' and put it in the middle?

i did think about that, and i might do it, but i wanted to find an owl crochet pattern or something so it was part of the blanket itself. unfortunately i havent been able to yet.

Hmm, I know I have a bird crochet motif, maybe you could make the eyes bigger to make it into an owl? Let me look for the book, it's from this cute pamphlet book that has all these different animal motifs!

ETA: Ok, the book I have is called Color Bright Creatures: 8 Awesome Animal Afghans and of course on the amazon page there isn't any pics of the birds motif. But I found this blog that had the bird pattern worked up, and it looks like either she already increased the size of the eyes or since her yarn is lighter than pictured in the book but the eyes look bigger!

And it might be hard to incorporate this particular motif into a blanket with granny squares since it is a round motif worked into a hexagon shape...maybe you could figure out how to put a square around it?

Smiley Putting a square around a hexagon should actually be relatively easy. Like, putting slip stitiches on two of the sides, and working sc or hdc or dc etc... into the parts you need to branch out to make a corner. OR to save some time and/or thinking power you could applique the piece on... or have it attached to the rest of the blanket with spaces around it.

oh wow i love those! they do look a lot like owls! I may just have to make something like that separately and do something a little more granny square like, although i bet it wouldnt be too hard to make it somewhat squareish. it still wouldnt be very granny. Thank you for that link!

Okay I need some opinions here please! Should I make my afghan from all 'flower squares like this:

Or does it look better with a plain granny inbetween, like this?

I think all flowers would be...a little overkill.
how about doing a checkerboard style, but throw in squares of different colors, like from the flowers so it could be like this:
green, flower, creme, flower, pink, flower, green etc
creme, flower, pink, flower, green, flower, creme etc
pink, flower, creme, flower, green, flower, pink etc

No prob! I can't actually find if she has the pattern typed out there, if you want it let me know and I can type it up for you! Or you might have mad dog skills and can just figure it out from the pic (I'm the type that's better with a pattern!)  Wink

I vote for the plain squares in between! I have the same or similar pattern and really like it, the 3d flowers are awesome and I thought they were really fun to make. But I think they pop more with the plain squares mixed in, more visual interest. And maybe a smidge less work to crochet!  Wink

I usually work better with a pattern too. I was going to try to wing it or go get the book, but if you would like to type the pattern up for me that would rock! if its a lot of trouble though dont worry about it.  And I definitely agree about having a plain square between the flower motifs!
