An old blender or food processor (Goodwill or Salvation Army type) is great for grating the soap!  It'll make you sneeze, though.

Boo Hoo! Why am I only reading this now?
Until last spring/summer I had a grocery bag filled with soap scraps ... you know, those tiny pieces which keep slipping off your washcloth in the shower.

I had someone in to 'help' me houseclean - to lower the evidence that I might be a hoarder - and they convinced me to toss the bag, which had been accumulated over the past 15 or so years. (My original intention had been to use them to make melt and pour soap ... except that it wasn't the correct kind of soap to use.)

I will have to restart the saving I guess.

i use essentially the same recipe but cut the water a little.  a bucket lasts us about a month.  ( i do a lot of laundry! )  surprisingly, my picky husband doesn't complain about the scent of fels soap.  really it just makes your clothes smell like you dried them outside on a warm sunny day.  and another nice thing is that the whole process, minus aging it overnight, takes about 20 minutes, tops, which is a lot less time than driving to the next town over to buy detergent.

I would like to try this but am not clear about the measurements.
Can I ask how big is one cup?  Is it the standard 250 ml cup or is it just a teacup or similar.  I assume it is level cupfuls of the borax and washing soda.

Thank you one and all! I have thought about this at different times, but just haven't gotten around to try it (the powder), but I will definately try this liquid... I read through all 15 pages (at least to here) instead of going to bed *grin*...

Also, that hint about the vinegar mixed with the fabric softener is great. I usually just dilute it down with water 1:1 because it makes it last longer and you don't get that thick buildup in your automatic dispensers.

Another suggestion, instead of having to pour the vinegar out of a gallon jug I am going to buy another slimline beverage (I had to really search for the correct name of these silly things) container to put the vinegar in. I use odoban (which is eucalyptus based) for odor control and have it in one of these above my washer. Easy to dispense, out of the way and easy to use.
