I got my courage to actually make a quilt from looking at the Gees Bend quilts

I cut up a bunch of thrift store worsted wool trousers and a couple suit jackets and sewed them into strips.

Some I nudged into green and pumpkin and gold

and even some purple with koolaid dye.

It uses a yardsaled wool blanket as batting.

This was begun in October 2009, and expresses my feelings of the season.  It was finished in January, in time to be a birthday present to myself, and in time to keep us warm during this real cold blast of a winter we've had this year.

It's certainly inexpert, having all kinds of puckers and wrinkles and what have you.  It even ate the sewing machine.  But it's fierce, and it's mine.  Smiley

It's awesome!  I like how you put all those fabrics and details together.

What a beautiful Thing! The mix of muted recycled clothing and the brightness of the leaves and stars are fantastic.

Thank you all!  Smiley

I wasn't nuts about the color selection available in thrifted wool, but it's good in that you can make a quilt that isn't too girly, but can also keep it from being too overwhelmingly masculine with appliques.

My husband loves this, and he hates wool.  I was pleased.  I had visions of only using it on my side of the bed, while he had "his" blankets on his side.

But I was willing to make that sacrifice, if necessary.  Wink

I LOVE the Gee's Bend book. I can totally see the book's inspiration in your quilt. Great work!  Wink

I love it, too! You did great. Rules aren't really necessary to know or follow to make a great quilt. All you need to know is the basics of assembly and stitch. It's beautiful.

This is beautiful, I love all the muted tones. It makes me want to try my hand at applique (something I've been afraid of so far!)
