First stenciling project

Printed tee- shirts seem to cost way too much, $25 for a shirt!!! So, after reading many posts about freezer paper stenciling, I decided to try it myself. I made two shirts, for my husband, and I really only like one of them. I guess I can write the first one off as my starter work. I also found out with that one that the more detail the harder it was to get the freezer paper to stick to the shirt. That and my iron doesn’t like me! The second one was just like a shirt I found online for $24 plus shipping, I am proud to be a cheapskate, and did it myself!

They look great!  Yes, fiddly pieces can be annoying, but I found that if you adjust everything flat before using your iron, and then just press directly down with the iron, as opposed to moving back and forth with it, you will stick better.  You definitely don't need high heat, and sometimes all you need is just the tip to set some of the fine pieces .  Sometimes I will set the main image down then cut out some of the defining bits and add them afterwards, before adding the paint.

When you ironed on your freezer paper did you have something hard between the t-shirt and the ironing board?  My ironing board is a bit too padded so I use a piece of cardboard--for some reason the freezer paper (also iron in interfacing and wonderunder!) seem to work better with a hard flat surface and not a padded one!

Can't wait to see future projects now that you have learned this!

I love stenciled tshirts but what is the best paint to use. Do you use a fabric medium. I'm thinking of just doing a bleach out, and dabbing on around the stencil, but still not sure.

I love both of them. I think you did great.

I actully did iron them on cardboard, because I only have a mini ironing board.

I used the fabric paints (I think their called puffy paints). Dabbed them on with a foam brush so that they wouldn't be puffy.

There is non puffy fabric paint and you can buy a medium to add to acrylic paint to make it fabric paint too.
