Mini Hawaiian Whale Quilt Antique Reproduction w/ Archival Mounting
This tiny 2" x 2" piece is based on a Hawaiian theme Crib Quilt I restored for a client. I was captivated by the whales and the folky quality of the original textile. My goal was to miniaturize as many aspects of the original whale quilt as possible. I tried to match techniques and materials to stay true the inspiration of the original...
Blue Print for whale: circa 1860's
Brown "Seaweed" print for quilt binding: circa 1860's
Background fabric for photo: circa 1870's
(I'm going to make another mini whale quilt with this)
White Background: 19th Century cotton
mounting fabric: archival cotton twill
handmade miniature staples used for mounting
In the interest of complete authenticity, I also distressed and restored the binding and washed the little quilt. I especially like the way the corners crinkled and the piece came alive and puckered just like the original after washing. I noticed a little color loss in the binding and a little wicking of the surplus brown dye from the bind
ing into the white background after washing...just like a real crib quilt.
I'll post better pictures soon and thanks to Craftster for the Challenge!http://www.facebook.com/DrewWatsonTextileRestorationandConservation

description of the original piece and restoration job:
"Rare Hawaiian Whale theme crib quilt. Early 19th century. This piece was so fragile it literally could have blown apart in the wind when it came to me. It needed extensive restoration, stabilization, color touch-up, a proper mounting, and expert cleaning (by Robert Barone). This is what it's all about...I truly loved working on this project."http://www.facebook.com/DrewWatsonTextileRestorationandConservation
