Craft Challenge #49 – Pasta Portraits - Due Apr 1 - Apr 7

04/20/10 - Winner announced!

Congrats to daisy2799 for her entry titled, Marilyn in Pink!
Read all about her project here:  http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=343766.0

04/08/10 - Vote now!  Scroll up to see the voting poll!

04/01/10 - The entry board is open!  http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?board=441.0

In honor of Craftster’s recent move to the new servers and our macaroni art sacrifices to the “server-move gods and goddesses,” we bring you the Pasta Portraits Challenge!

Your challenge this month is to craft a pasta portrait from a photo of someone.  The person in the photo can be yourself, your neighbor, a famous figure or any one person you’d like to honor in pasta!  Along with your entry, you must also share the photo that served as the inspiration for your pasta piece.  After all, we need to see the phenomenal resemblance to the original! Grin

There are no size requirements for your completed piece, and you can use whatever material you’d like as your base (canvas, fiber board, your bedroom wall, etc.).  The portrait itself should be entirely composed of pasta in whatever varieties you prefer, and adhesive, of course.  You can color your pasta with paint, ink, dye or markers.

Here are some pasta inspirations to get your gears turning: macaroni face, Mona Lisa lasagna (say that three times, fast!), Tammy Faye noodles and spiral noodle self-portrait.

Rules:

  • Post your craft during the period of Apr 1 - Apr 7 2010. No sooner.  No later.  On Apr 1 there will be a special folder created for entries.
  • Voting will happen from Apr 8 - Apr 15 2010.
  • Each participant can enter ONE project (Although your entry can have multiple components to it).

Originality:

It's probably impossible to know whether your project is 100% original and has never been posted on Craftster or made by anyone else in the past.  But if your project was definitely inspired by something you've seen before, then just give credit to that project.

Prizes:

At the end, I'll set up a poll right here and the first place winner will get...

(1) their project in the Featured Projects area
(2) their project in the Craftster Blog

And this prize (winner can receive prize in U.S. or non-U.S.):

Any one item from one of Craftster's online shops!

A question, does it have to be a PERSON? Or can it be a famous figure, even if it isn't human? Not that what I have in mind is an object or anything, but it definitely isn't human...

Can you paint your base a solid color, because I am thinking of using wood?

Yepper, that's okay!  You can prep your base however you feel necessary.  The focus should be the noodles.

Oh this is too great!  My hubby is a huge Seinfeld fan.  We just recently watched the episode "The fusilli Jerry" from season 6.  Kramer made a lovely statue of Jerry out of pasta.  Jerry: "Why fusilli?"   Kramer responded, "Because you're silly."  He went on to say he was going to make a George out of ravioli. I want to do this!  My attempy to create a teeny tiny challenge entry failed tremendously and I sustained a nasty hot glue gun burn on top of it.  I think I will use elmer's for my pasta portrait!  Wink

How about glitter?  Grin  Can you color your pasta with glitter? My "subject" requires at least a few glittery accents. I want to make sure I'm within the rules and I don't want to use too much if it's frowned upon. You know how one can get carried away with glitter....  Cheesy

has anyone in here done one of these before? If I join in the run, I want to go all out, and have a portrait that lasts a while. When does your pasta go bad? I know some people talk about macaroni art from when they were little, but I don't remember doing any before.

My husband made this ship out of mostly pasta for Craft Challenge 12 http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=98811.0 and it lasted for several years. Actually, I bet we'd still have it if it wasn't knocked off the shelf and shattered upon impact with the tile floor.  Tongue

Dry pasta lasts pretty much forever, unless it gets damp. You could spray it with gloss or something.

As an indication, the holiday house I used to go to as a kid had a macaroni jesus on the wall, which was made by the kids of the owner in the 70s and is still there today.

I've never done a portrait out of pasta before. I'm going to try it.   Smiley
I've only done pasta crafts with my children when they were little like picture frames & Christmas ornaments.

That's so cool Pinky! We made pasta bridges in my 8th grade physics class and then had a test to see which one was the strongest (they were all destroyed in the process). A pasta boat would have been awesome with the pasta bridges!

Hey, guys!  No extra decorations for on the pasta itself (ribbon, glitter, punch-outs, etc.) other than dyes, paint, markers, etc.  Not quite sure how to word that, so I hope it makes sense! Cheesy

PinkyK, how about metallic paint?  It's... shimmery!

I have a great idea as well that involves a couple.... and I didn't see a reply to to this one. Also does it need to be adhered? I was hoping to work on a table top and then reuse the material.... of course I wouldn't be using paint or anything just natural colors.

are these ideas ok? good luck everyone!

Good questions!

-- The person in the portrait should be singular.

-- Your portrait does not need to be adhered.

hi...this is such a great idea! can I smash my pasta? Does it have to be in it's original form? Who knew there would be so many questions about what one can legally "do" to pasta!

These may SEEM like stupid questions, but bear with me:

1.  Do you have to use store bought pasta or can you make your own?

2.  Can you use cooked pasta?

Not at all!

1.  Do you have to use store bought pasta or can you make your own?  Store bought, homemade or both -- your choice!

2.  Can you use cooked pasta?  Sure!
