Ren Fest 2009...finally...

Okay, so I started these last, oh, Octoberish?  And the festival was in December, in Hammond, LA.  And I'm just now getting my rear in gear and posting the pictures!  In theory, we were going to go to the park, and take some additional, more detailed shots, but then the weather got nasty, so I figured I'd go ahead and get on with it, since I'm already planning this year's outfits.

First, some back story.  This was my friend's first time going to a ren fest, and she wanted to dress up so badly!  But she couldn't sew!  So I offered to make her outfit, in exhcange for regular feeding, and in the end, she treated me by paying for my ticket, too.  So the first thing we did was to go to the fabric store and look at patterns.  She almost immediately fell in love with this one:  http://www.simplicity.com/p-2022-costumes.aspx.  But as luck would have it, they were out of that one in the right size.  That's okay!  We got these instead:  http://www.simplicity.com/p-2627-costumes.aspx (for the skirt and chemise) and http://butterick.mccall.com/b4669-products-6871.php?page_id=385 (for the bodice with the peplum).  She wanted very fancy fabrics, so we picked out a bronze/gold brocade, a slightly stretchy crinkled chiffon, and a sapphire blue suedette.  I know, nothing actually period, but she got tons of compliments from all angles, and had a ball, so I'm not too worried about it.  And six weeks later, we got this!







And with a measly week and a half left before the faire, and my own (vastly inappropriate, anyway, because it's medieval) costume 1200 miles away, I whipped up this chemise and bodice, and borrowed a broomstick skirt to wear, comme ca:



And yes, that was the pose of the day.   

I'm actually pretty darn proud of myself, since I got everything done, including finished seams, in time.  Somehow my friend's bodice shrunk between muslin and final, but she has since lost weight, so hopefully it'll fit a bit better this coming season.  Anyway, I hope you like it!

I must say, these turned out quite lovely.  I go to a number of SCA events each year, and I see a fair amount of clothing.  Nice job.

The blouse and bodice YOU are wearing is my absolute favorite!  It's freakin' GORGEOUS.  I want them, but in black.  Brilliant.  I can't stop thinking about it, honestly, and I do NOT have the skill to make it.
