I tried to make allll of my christmas presents this year, and I made several sets of these for friends...

I used LED lights, white computer paper and wrapping paper.

http://www.origami-instructions.com/origami-water-balloon.html

I made zillions of these origami water balloons, then blew them up and slipped them onto the lights - they shouldn't set on fire or anything cos the lights are led and don't get very hot.

(I found the idea after google searching madly for handmade fairy lights etc, so not sure where it came from!)

unlit...

lit....

These are a brilliant, thrifty idea!  I'm totally stealing it.  ;-)

Great job!

My daughters would LOVE these for their room.  I just wish I already had a strand of LED lights to use, but alas, we have yet to upgrade our Christmas lights.

Thanks! Smiley
You should totally steal it!  I've seen them made with magazine pages, which is even more thrifty and the lights shine through all the different colours and patterns, but that wouldn't have suited the style of the the friend I was making these for.

Oh, thats a shame, maybe look out for some on sale, or I got mine from a cheap shop, they were 6 I think which is good here!   Depending on how old your girls are I bet they'd like to help make the shades too, if they're into crafty stuff!  I don't know if I'd like to risk them on normal fairy lights, when I was researching this project I did see examples of them on normal xmas lights, but personally, I wouldn't have been happy to give a possibly flammable gift!

this would make a wonderful night light for my son.  now that he's walking, he keeps trying to play with the one in the socket, so it needs to go.

There are so many types of led string lights and I'm not sure which are the best to use. Which did you use?
