I love signups, discussion, crafting for people who I know will appreciate the work, and I LOVE getting lovely packages in the mail. But even if I really like a theme (after all, that's why I signed up) I have a terrible time making good pieces to my partner's requests. I think it's largely because I only make things when I get excited about a technique or idea, and a lot of things won't pique my interest from my partner's guidelines. I was proud of my She Blinded Me With Science swap package (my partner requested a knit object I'd always wanted to try), but on the other hand the only time I tried to exchange ATCs I couldn't direct my creativity to what themes people requested and quite near the send date I sat myself down and worked till they were done, and they were all... plain. So I'm waiting, hopeful that I'll get to a point where I feel certain I can produce a decent package no matter what my partner requests.

I've had some swaps that I thought would be really easy, but ended up being creatively hard for me (a magnet swap comes to mind  Smiley). I don't make perfect stuff, but I'm pretty sure all of my partners have appreciated the love, time and effort that went into what I made them, and I bet your swap partners did too.

If your still anxious about random-type swaps, you could always participate in a Wist swap, or an Ongoing Wish Swap... then you know exactly what your getting into!

I've really loved doing the wish swaps, because i can pick exactly what i want to make, and always wait for someone to want something knitted. It takes away a ton of the swap anxiety.
I signed up for 2 altered paper type swaps, and I thought i'd be creative enough- I love doing art to my favorite themes, but my partners had really hard ones for me, and I spent forever on them and they're my best work, but they aren't nearly as good as the other swappers work.
So, I stick to the wish swaps and organizing my own swaps so i can pick my own partner, or ones where there's a ton of creative space.

Hi guys, please don't mention specific swap experiences in your posts. They'll be edited to remove specific information if necessary.

If things are mentioned and people can work out who you swapped with it could hurt peoples feelings, and I'm sure you wouldn't want that. Smiley

Hey pocketwatch, I've found that sometimes it is harder to do a theme swap than a swap that is for a specific item (like quilt blocks, crocheted motifs). I also highly recommend some of the other out of the box type swaps that have been mentioned,  something like the wishlist swap where you are selecting a very specific item to swap ahead of time, that way you can send something that is your specialty or that you already know you rock at making!!

I would also like to put in a plug for the "Shop the Swap" swap. It is a awesome swap for someone who likes to make things that don't have to meet a partner's likes and dislikes. I have been on a spinning kick lately and I have been spinning more yarn than I can use, so I put my excess yarn in my "shop" and trade for items that I can't make. Plus the discussion page is always hopping  Grin

Ongoing wish swap is great, you can pick and choose the kinds of things that you know you can do, and themes that you can work with, then you know that you can work on something that you like working on and that you know your partner will love.

another vote for ongoing wish swap!  I love it.  Its pretty low stress... well as low stress as a swap can be.  I want to try out the shop the swap but its intimidates me a bit.  plus, i need to get a stash of crafted goods going.  something i seem to have trouble doing.

I just feel like maybe I am not with it enough to swap.  But i like looking at all the awesome things that have been sent out and appreciated.

Where do I learn more about a "shop the swap" swap?  Sounds interesting.  Thanks!
