Door Hanging UPDATED with New Pictures
«

She won a blue ribbon
I hope these pictures are alright. My camera is old and the quality is really lacking.
I read a book about India and all the fabulous artwork done by the people. I decided I wanted to have a door hanging and since I didn't have $1000.00 to spend I decided to make one myself. I started out with just a small drawing I made on a piece of white flannel. ( one of the elephants ) It grew from there. I taught myself how to sew on the mirror circles from a book I found at my local library. The stitches I chose had no rhyme or reason.
Thank you for looking at my door hanging.

This is beautiful. Tell us a bit about the various designs. Looks sort of part-Indian, part Pennsylvania Dutch.

I checked out books at the library on India. They had a picture of a wedding door hanging from the late 1800's. I really liked it and decided to try to make a piece of the pattern. I played around with material and floss and made an elephant. I didn't know what to do with it, so I made another one
A few months later, it turned into this. I almost never follow a pattern and usually make stuff up as I go. That is why this doorway hanging is a little bit of everything.

I find the 'make-it-up-as-you-go' stuff are usually far more interesting than the 'copy-a-pattern' stuff. This is really special. Tell us more about the competition and prize that you won.

Humboldt! We need close ups so that we can adequately drool over this piece!
Amazing work! I'd love to hear more about why you chose those designs.

you deserve a lot more than just a blue ribbon for this piece! Besides which, they don't really give you enough ribbon to do anything with it- just more trimmings for your stash!
They ought to give you the whole roll!

That's fantastic! What kind of thead did you use? DMC stranded cotton? Wool? Other? Did you work on it in a frame?
I ask because you've seriously inspired me to consider making a doorhanging of my own. It would be a very ambitious project for me, but I'm really tempted.
