Couple of spinning questions. What is a drum card? Also, I feel silly for asking but do I need to wind the yarn into a skein or can I knit as is?

A drum carder is a step up from hand carders.  They card various fiber together to make a fiber batt than can be spun from directly or used to make roving to spin from.

Here is the drum carder I have.

It looks like the yarn is wound into a skein ... not like the skeins you see on commercial yarns though!  You will need to wind it into a ball so it doesn't get all tangles when you knit from it.

You can use a ball winder, or your thumb!  Place the skein around the backs of two chairs to wind into a ball.  Or do what my Grandmother did and use a child to hold the skein stretched on out reached arms.

I'm glad you enjoyed you goodies. i had a hard time deciding whether to wind them into a ball for you or leave them in skeins. i just think they look so pretty in skeins... Before I got my ball winder, i wound my balls on a smooth wooden dowel laving a tail hanging out of the center so it was a center pull ball.
I would love to see the gerbils you make of it! My hat was keeping me toasty last night!!

Sam, we totally need to get together, it's been way too long...I miss you.

I like making stuff. Rumor has it, I'm an elf. Like a Santa Elf, not one of those elegant LOTR types.  Mostly because I compulsively craft and partially because I have green shoes.

yay!!!  it looks fabulous!  and so do those pillows made by lo{ve} !(i can swear i've seen them somewhere before; perhaps on someone's wist?  they're really cool).
and i love the fabric in the embroidery hoops you've got going on there.

very cool room indeed.  everything matches in a completely eclectic, mis-matchy way.
love it!
