I've been having quite a bit of ridiculous fun making rockets lately. My last one was a Saturn V, (which I love and hug frequently and make blast-off noises with), so I thought, What to do next? Redstone? Atlas? But I decided on something a little more modern: the Shuttle!

Turns out, it was a lot more complicated than I originally thought. I just had to do it all to scale, so it took some work to make sure all the parts were proportional. I found lots of images online and took loads of measurements. (I have about 3-4 pages of scribbly notes!) Lots of measuring was involved during the crocheting process too ... and ripping out and redoing, etc. I also had an awful time finding orange yarn (go figure)!

The SRBs and Orbiter are detachable from the External Tank - so you can properly reproduce a launch in the comfort of your living room.

Every time I thought I was pretty much done, my boyfriend kept suggesting little details that I needed to include. I drew the line at 'You should make the cargo bay doors open'.   Wink

I'm really happy with it! *Hugs Shuttle*

THIS ROCKS!!!!!  It looks like so much fun!  Once you had the pattern down, was it very hard to actually crochet?

I literally don't even know what to say to this...it's sheer magnitude of awesomeness is too much for my brain to comprehend all at once. I would like to start a slow, deliberate clap that will turn into applause for you now.

The actual crocheting wasn't too bad - it's all Sc (of course there were a bunch of alterations once you actually start doing it). The real trick is to figure out how many rows/stitches per cm or inch and then you can figure out a rough pattern before you start.

A space themed nursery sounds SO COOL! The pattern is on my Etsy shop now, if you are interested.

I'm really excited about it!  So far I've just been making appliques that my mom wants to put into a quilt, and trying desperately to find anything I can related to it!  (I did find really cool wall stickers at Shopko in the exact colors we used on the appliques!)

This pattern will get plenty of use, I'm sure my brother will want one as soon as he sees it, and of course I'll need one for myself!   Grin

It's such a cuddly looking shuttle!  (I would make hug it and make woosh noises too!)

I must confess that what drew me in to this thread was the picture... from the shape, I thought for sure that it was going to be a, erm... "adult toy" cozy!   Shocked  Teehee!

That is great! I loved your Saturn V, but this is even better. I mentioned on the other thread about my grandfather working for NASA, so now I can tell you more about him with this. He was actually one of the ones that helped to design the shuttles!

Also, he and my father inspected and passed one of the launch pads down at Kennedy.

I <3 space stuff!!

It's fabulous!  Especially that you did the hard part of making it to scale.  That's like maths and stuff!   Cheesy

Can I.....Can I just BE you? I'm just astounded by the level of sheer, total, AWESOME that I see in these pictures. You have skills beyond my comprehension, to draft and create a pattern like this....

Seriously, can I be you? Please?
