So at Christmas The ManFlesh's mom and aunt were reminiscing about playing with Betsy McCall paper dolls when they were girls and how they think their brother probably through them all out when cleaning out their mom's home after she moved.  Within a week or two, I stumbled upon a reference to a site that had printable Betsy McCall dolls (http://tpettit.best.vwh.net/dolls/pd_scans/betsy_mccall/index.html)!  His mom's birthday is this weekend, so I made her these.

I chose a selection of outfits from several months across a few years' worth of McCalls Magazine and put together an 8.5 x 14 sized image which a friend printed on big, pro-quality, matte, photo paper. Finally, I glued small magnets to the back.

I used spray adhesive to attach the clothing to card stock so it would be extra thick, then cut it out with an x-acto.  The dolls (and dog bed) was attached to a magnet sheet. If I knew exactly how to go about it, I should have glued them to some thin metal, because the various polarities of the magnets on the dolls and on the clothes caused some issues and I had to reattach the magnets on the clothes and they don't necessarily sit right on both Betsy and Barbara.

The girls in some outfits:

After printing, I realized that these outfits make the sweet girls look like Nancy Reagan and Barbara Bush.  Sorry girls.

I had a second print out on glossy photo paper and used parts of it to decorate the box.

Just to complete the serendiptious nature of this whole thing I'll show a photo of the wrapped package.  I also learned at Christmas that her favorite animal is the giraffe and then the next week I found these letters on sale at JoAnn's for 25 cents and picked it up hoping to get a chance to use it.  Whee!

I hope my own mom's birthday gift is this easy...

those are really cute, and it sounds like you went to a lot of effort to make them very nice....i like that they are magnets too so she can actually do something with them!

Thanks!  It was hard to pick outfits, because there are SO many cute ones that I left out due to time limits.  If I had girls I'd want to make some of the outfits that didn't get printed for them to wear!  I imagined that she would play with them with the 5 and 3 year old grand daughters so I wanted them to be moderately sturdy.  That's also why I printed up Barbara (who wasn't mentioned in the conversation) and made 2 of each type of outfit (shots, capris, coats, suits, etc.)

If you remember her you'll get a big kick out the scanned pages!  They all have themes like "Betsy Goes to the Shore!" and "Betsy Stays Up Waiting for Santa!" and my personal favorite, "Betsy Saves for a Bond!"

This is such a great project -- I love paper dolls, and the fact that you made them long lasting is just awesome.  *this rocks*

Thanks!  I love them, too!  I wanted them to be usable and durable, but it broke my heart a little bit to photoshop out the tabs around the clothes.

I remember Betsy! My sister, named Betsy, and I would fight over who got to cut out the doll each month. She's older so I think she won most of the time. Thanks for the link and the trip down memory lane!

This is a crackup.  If I remember right, Betsy McCall and I were born the same month in the same year.  What a memory jolt!

I love your dolls.  I may have to go print these out for my granddaughter.

Great job.

Thanks!  They were so fun to look through and choose.  While some of the era-specific stuff is funny, it's also a relief that it now seems quaint and old-timey.

well, the next time you are giving her a present you can make her more clothes for the dolls, on going gift! hehe

I have a feeling these would be one of the dreaded-types of on-going gifts!   Wink  I might be best off sticking with the one-time novelty-type gift with this one.   Smiley

Brilliant! BTW, I had the same problem with the magnets lining up too, when I made some of these. They'll be a lot of fun to play with on the refrigerator.

My daughter (6yo) and I made some of these a few months ago. We had the same problem with the magnets polarity, and the fact that the magnets on the clothes were not strong enough to hold over the magnetic bodies on my daughters (sheet metal) magnet board.

Our solution was to print the people out, send them through the sticker machine, and stick them on scenes cut out of magazines and old books. The pages are held on the magnet board with regular magnets in the corners, then the clothes can be placed over the dolls. Not very travel friendly, as the pages are full size, but if we make more, we will look for smaller scenes.

Makes me wonder if a person could make a book of scenes and have a pouch of clothes... Off to see what I can come up with.
