From Cate pattern on the Burda site. A lot of people had issues with the pattern pieces but I took too many flu pills one day and after that it was really easy to understand.

I did change the skirt pattern - used a 1/4 circle skirt, because the skirt in the pattern is VERY full and makes you look pregnant. I wasn't and didn't want to look like I was. Other minor change was that I beaded the bodice instead of sewing a tab of fabric over to hide the ruching. I also added buttons to the bodice as I don't trust my zip inserting skills. The zipper begins where they end, but is hidden in folds of skirt.

Happy accidents: The gathered skirt at the back. I got something wrong with the formula for the circle skirt, and the waist was much too big. So I pushed it all around the back, and quite like the effect. And the little rise of the front hem: the fabric wasn't quite enough for my height plus heels - bias cut uses so much! I considered cutting all the way around the bottom to even the hem, but decided I didn't want to lose the length at the back. Turns out it made it much easier to walk, dance, etc., and my pretty shoes weren't wasted.

Bought the fabric (raw silk) in September, hemmed the skirt the night before the wedding (28 November). Don't tell anyone but the lining was made from an old cotton bedsheet and didn't get hemmed, only pinked. Smiley

Thanks for looking!

How beautiful - both you and the dress! I love your whole look, and you're completely right about the happy accidents, the hem and the gathering are really flattering.

It's beautiful!  You're right, the length and back gathering are great sewing mishap side-effects

I love it.You look wonderful in it and it's nice that you have made the little alterations to suit you. The 'mistake' with the skirt length worked out perfectly in terms of the pretty shoes and dancing! good job.

NB: I'm off to find the pattern now.

Lovely. I wish I would have made my own wedding dress but I've only made some costumes and I couldn't talk myself into it. I love the last picture!

beautiful pictures, and i love that you made your own wedding dress! (i plan to do that someday... sigh...)

you did an awesome job, and there's nothing better than happy accidents!  i actually quite like the idea of having the hem slightly higher in the front--to show off the shoes Smiley you are a great seamstress and i'm glad it turned out so well for such a special day!

The beading at the bodice is the perfect unobtrusive, but elegant, amount.

Love the look from the back... well done!

That looks totally stunning and I think your accidental style changes were terrific - I love the fullness in the back of the skirt and that rise in the front is great.  No point wasting pretty shoes!

Thank you so much everyone. I'm so glad that other people can use something from it, even if it was just to help find a pattern Smiley

Sewing my own wedding dress was NOT something I ever imagined I'd do (I started sewing relatively recently) but I am so glad I did. Wedding planning was stressful and unpleasant, and I was very glad that the dress at least was in my hands. Strangely enough, despite the last-minute rush, sewing it was the thing that relaxed me most.

To anyone who's considering sewing their own dress, I'd say give yourself plenty of time to do a mock-up, but once you know that works then absolutely go for it.

Thank you again for all the congratulations!

Oh my goodness, this is beautiful! It suits you so well.
Its exactly the sort of style i'm looking for for my own dress - hope you don't mind but i'm copying and pasting one or two of your pictures into my 'wedding dress ideas' file and am taking note of the pattern number to show my mother-in-law (unlike you i'm not clever enough to make my own dress!)
Congratulations Cheesy
