What else is there but to make a shopping tote using the lids as my bottom .....
I call this the American Crock Lid Bottom Plarn Tote .... (I think the pic shows why)
My theme this year is - 'Recycle By Recreating To Reuse'
I don't know about you, but my totes/purses/bags go through a beating both inside and out. I'm always laying it on the ground so of course it gets dirty and something is always spilling out on the inside.
The lid on the bottom keeps my plarn tote lasting longer.... And because it is made with plastic yarn, it is very durable and strong. I was able to fit 7 of these in my shopping cart the other day....
Punch holes in each lid about every ½” around the lid ensuring you’re making the same # of holes on each.
Blanket stitch twice around each lid.
With an F or G hook, join with a sl st in any space and 2 to 3 sc in each space around. Join with a sl st to the first sc then fasten off.
Repeat the same for the 2nd lid, (do not fasten off – this is where you will be joining the 2 lids in the middle) join with a sl st to the first sc and also through a st on other lid, yo and pull through to complete sl st. (see pic below)
Continue until you can’t go any further. Once you’ve complete the middle seam, you will now begin making the sides of the bag. Sc in the back of each sc of the previous row. I discovered that this puts more of the weight on the plarn then on the lid.
Work your way around the outer of the lid back to the middle, sctog the last st on the lid and a stitch in the middle, sctog next st in the middle and 1st st on next lid, sc around the outer of next lid back around, join w/sl st to first sc.
For this grocery tote, I switched to the H hook and did tr st in each st around. Repeated the same for each row except every 3rd row worked blo to create a rim for edging with a contrasting color.
Row 12, (with contrasting color) hdc in each st around.
Row 13, (with contrasting color) determine how big and how far apart you want placement of handles... hdc in each st up to where you want to make handle, make 20 ch, join w/hdc to complete first handle and in each st around up to where you want other handle, make 20 ch, join w/hdc to complete 2nd handle and in each st arnd, join w/sl st in 1st hdc made.
Row 14 (with primary color) -15 (with contrasting color), hdc in each st around. Fasten off.
With contrasting color, rev sc in each st around lid. Fasten off, weave in all ends.
