I don't live in alaska, but my dad does and I do visit ever/everyother summer.  My step mom took me to black elk leather, they are friggin awesome!!!  i wish they had an online shop!  Now, i have been hearing a lot about this quilt tree place.  Can someone tell me where it is so that the next time I'm there I can go.  And if there are any other craft stores that I should check out I would love to check them out.  Especially if they have things specially unique to Alaska!  I have been to most of the bead stores in Anchorage.  Was on a bead kick last time I was there   Grin
Also if anyone knows of places out near the copper river (i can't think of the town there) we visit there as well, also anything along the Kenai peninsula.
Also has anyone been to the fur exchange? And what abot the big fur place in downtown anchorage?'

I love Alaska!!! If it wasn't for all the snow, i'd live there!!

Next time you hit Black Elk, ask if you can have one of their mail-order catalogs... it's not a webpage, but it's nice to have on hand!  Cheesy  Kat, the really nice lady in charge of the rock section said she handles a lot of the mail orders and gave me a catalog when I came in last time.

Check the yellow pages online to start plotting out stores to hit- I'm up in Fairbanks and have never been down to Kenai or hung out in the Copper River area.  I have had really, REALLY good luck finding places that way.

I've never hit the fur place downtown, but I sort of think it's mostly all ready made garments?  Is there an Alaska Raw Fur branch down in Anchorage?  There is one up here in Fairbanks that is pretty darn cool to visit.

I didn't know they had mail order catalogs!  I'll have to ask my step mom to get me one and mail it to me Cheesy  There is a fur exchange of some kind in Anchorage.  My dad and step-mom took my little sister and step brother to it a couple years ago.  Each kid got a fur pelt.  I want to go some time, but sadly it doesn't fall during the summer vacation Sad

Yeah!  I think you're talking about Fur Rondy!  I've wanted to make it down for that, but either the weather is crap for driving or I miss it by a week due to scheduling conflicts.  I've heard it's a blast since they have a ton of other stuff going on, like dog races, weight pulls, outhouse races etc (sort of like Fairbanks hosing the North American Open and Chatanika's outhouse races all in one place for an entire week).

I do really like Black Elk's catalog- it's not in color, but it has SO much oddball stuff listed all in one place that it is way worth it.  I wish I had some more ideas of places to visit down there for you too.
