In the stereoscopic world this is called "freeviewing" of the stereoscopic images.  Each image is a representation of what you would see out of your left and your right eyes...they are photos taken from slightly different angles.  You are trying to fool your eyes into thinking that they're looking at an actual scene by focusing slightly away from the photos themselves and into the distance.  The way I do this is by crossing my eyes until the two images become a third one in the middle...then focusing on that third one.  Let me know if this helps!
