I have one serious logistics question, however. What keeps the drawers from getting jammed when the items land in a deep pile at the back of the drawer? Do the long items, like the screws, get tangled up with each other in a pile, thereby preventing the drawer from being pulled out? It seems like the hex nuts & washers wouldn't get tangled since they are round & have smoother surfaces. Even the category called "Hardware", the Allen wrench shapes, seem like they'd get tangled up, jamming the drawer.
Do the drawers not get jammed only because perhaps it is utilized more often during the day? As you said, "So if you happen to need a washer and don't want to go get one from the bin...you can just pull open the appropriate drawer and see if one has been collected..."
My other concern would be that after you pull out a drawer, for lets say the hardware, what prevents the ones that may have "piled up" (and not laying flat in the drawer) from falling to the drawer below? Not only would that mean the items are now mixed in with others, but they would be in the way of being able to fully shut that drawer again.
If this is happening, perhaps having the drawers set in on an angle (downwards, towards the front), with a stopper back to keep the drawer from coming out all the way, would help? That way the pieces could be dropped in the slots & they would land in the drawer and slide forward rather than pile up in the back.
This project intrigues me because my husband & I have a construction framing company & something like this could really help out when we sweep up the dropped nails, & screws at the end of the day. We tend to do the same thing- dump everything into a bucket & sort through the hardware, sawdust, gum wrappers, pencil butts, etc. at a later time (it's a good project to give the workers while we're all sitting around waiting for a late roof truss or lumber delivery!).
Please let me know what you are thinking about my comment/suggestion. I may
be way off base- because with out seeing it in "action" it is hard to really predict.
I am loving and
ROCKING this project and I agree that it would really help in a craft room for ribbon bits, pins, beads, etc!!!
