Ok heres the thing...I dont know where you buy beeswax or the scented oils to make lip balm...is the beeswax in liquid form or what?  Huh
OUt of these three options what would you say is the best to use to make lip balm:

petroleum jelly,
beeswax, or
Vitamin E

any suggestions would be appreciated! Grin

You can find beeswax in small quantities at craft stores in the section where they sell melt&pour soaping stuff, candle stuff, and lip balm stuff.  Or you can find it at your natural food store (not sure where).  Or you can get it online.  If you get a beeswax bar, you should grate it up before you try to melt it down.

You can't make lip balm w/just beeswax, though.  You have to mix it with oil (at least).  (commonly used oils for lip balm are sweet almond, avocado, olive).

You could use 1/2 oil and 1/2 beeswax for a very basic recipe.  Or you could buy some coconut oil (a solid at room temperature oil) at Wal-mart -- they sell it in the baking section in a plastic jar called "Louann") and add it to your recipe:

1/3 beeswax
1/3 oil
1/3 coconut oil (solid oil)

To make it, melt all your stuff in a pyrex (glass) measuring cup in the microwave at half power.  Microwave for one minute at a time, stir, repeat.

To color it, add a bit of old lipstick to the mixture before you microwave it.

To flavor it, add flavor oils after it's all melted.

You can find flavor oils in the chocolate/baking section of a craft store, sometimes.  Make sure they say OIL on them.

Or, you can use a few drops of some essential oils -- safe ones I'm familiar with are peppermint (a little goes a long way), lavender, lemongrass.  You can buy essential oils in the aromatherapy/health section of your health food store.  Make sure they are pure essential oils if you are going to use them in your lip balm.

Extracts aren't great because they aren't oil-based. Sad
