Or, as I'm calling it, my "Stanley Livingstone Expedition 2008 This-Would-Have-Been-Handy-In-Dar Wrap Skirt"

A couple of summers ago, I walked across Tanzania (be careful- if you get me started, I won't run out of stories for hours).  Along with a wool plaid shuka, a Maasai warclub, a lot of dirt, memories, pictures, Malaria and Giardia I brought back this gorgeous fabric... and then didn't touch it forever, because I was afraid I'd ruin it.  Until now!

Thank you Heather Ross, your Yard Sale Wrap Skirt was ABSOLUTELY PERFECT (and believe me, I spent a lot of time looking for something ABSOLUTELY PERFECT for this fabric).

My only regrets are not bringing home more awesome fabric (damn you, budget!).  Well, that and our expedition cook, Jafari.  I would have liked to have brought him home too.

Guardie for life.

I am really interested in doing a personal swap, especially for greener things like reusable lady items, wool dryer balls, or other such things.  I can knit, sew, draw, and put things together in pretty neat ways.  Please PM me if you're interested.

What a beautiful skirt! I agree that this was a perfect pairing of the fabric and pattern. It's always nice to have clothes that you loveGrin

We got back to the capitol shortly before the History channel trip departed (in the wrong direction, I might add).  They even hired a good number of our staff as support, including our expedition leader, who's one of the foremost living experts on European exploration of Africa.  While we drove a lot for various reasons of safety and/or health (man-eating lions, man-eating tsetse flies, refugee unrest, disease and injury), I suspect we covered a lot more of the route by foot then they did- I seem to remember it took them a lot less time than us (by almost half), and their daily mileage counts were worse than ours, what with avoiding the roads for some reason.

I tried to watch the show, but the first few episodes were just too much of what I don't like about reality TV -that is to say, staged immature conflicts, staged dangers, and changing the route/situation to make it MOAR DRAMATIC and MOAR DANGEROUS, while ignoring a) reality and b) the things that actually make Tanzania interesting.  Did it get better?  Did they stop arguing and start acting like, y'know, adults on an awesome trip?  Did they ever let their Maasai guards out of all the ceremonial/ornamental jewelry that they don't usually wear and into something more comfortable and less staged?  Or show any Maasai women?

Thanks all!  If you'll notice from the last picture, I managed to center the repeats of the pattern for half the panels before I started running out of fabric.  I wish I had been able to center them all!

It is a beautiful use of the fabric, and showcases it brilliantly!x

Well, that and our expedition cook, Jafari.  I would have liked to have brought him home too.

But because of this, you are my new hero!
