    lately i've been in the mood to make sweet things, because with my sugar addict brother, anything yummy is gone in a flash, but if i make it, i can tell him if he can have some or not..
    so, if anyone wants to share a recipe i'll put it here

    and share photos and experiences (in case you were wondering, apple sauce/ jam counts!)
    here are the recipes i got

    Opera Cream Candy Recipe
    This quick and easy opera cream recipe is taken from "The Carbondale Cook Book of Tried and Tested Recipes" by the Young Lady Workers of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Carbondale, Pennsylvania, published by the International Textbook Press, Scranton, PA, in 1924.

        Melt together three-fourths cup of milk, two cups sugar, two squares chocolate. Boil three or four minutes, flavor (with vanilla extract, if preferred) and set in cool place until absolutely cold, then beat until it becomes creamy. Drop into balls on waxed paper.



    Old-Time Vinegar Pull Toffee Recipe
    This vinegar toffee candy recipe is taken from Mom's recipe scrapbook, circa 1929. It is originally from an old magazine clipping of unknown origin, dated 1915.

    This is a perfect homemade candy recipe if you want to gather the family together for an old fashioned taffy pull.

        Two cups granulated sugar, one-half cup water, two tablespoonfuls vinegar, one tablespoonful butter, one teaspoonful vanilla, one-half teaspoonful cream of tartar. Cook all ingredients except cream of tartar until a few drops will crack in cold water. Then add cream of tartar and pour on greased slab. Start to pull when cool enough to handle. Keep hands cool by washing

    Crystal Rock Candy Recipe
    This old fashioned crystal rock candy recipe is taken from the book "Buckeye Cookery and Practical Housekeeping" published by Buckeye Publishing Company, Minneapolis, in 1877.

        Dissolve four pounds white sugar in one quart water. To make rock candy, boil this syrup a few moments, allow to cool, and crystallization takes place on the sides of the vessel.

        To make other candies, bring the syrup very carefully to such a degree of heat that the "threads," which drop from the spoon when raised into the colder air, will snap like glass. When this stage is reached, add a teaspoon of vinegar or cream of tartar to prevent "graining," and pour into pans


       
    Potato Candy Recipe
    Mom's Old Recipe For Mashed Potato Candy


    This old fashioned potato candy recipe is the one Mom used to make her special mashed potato candy topped with rich dark chocolate. I loved it when I was a kid, and I still do.

    It's hard to believe that such a delicious homemade confection can be created from such an ordinary ingredient as the common potato.

    Are you curious about candy made from mashed potatoes? This is one old fashioned candy recipe you simply have to try. You will love its chocolatey melt-in-your-mouth good taste.
    1 medium-sized potato, boiled and mashed fine; add 2 teaspoons butter, 1/4 pound coconut, 1 teaspoon vanilla, stir in 1 pound confectioners' sugar and beat until creamy.

    Put down in a buttered pan until hard; make 1 inch thick and pour over it 2 melted squares bitter (dark) chocolate. Put in a cold place for 2 hours and cut in squares to serve.

    Recipe For Potato Candy
    This extraordinary recipe for making homemade candy is taken from Mom's old recipe scrapbook, circa 1929.

    Old Fashioned Recipe For Seafoam Candy
    Two cups brown sugar, 1 cup cold water, 1 teaspoon of vinegar, white of 1 egg. Cook sugar and water till it forms a soft ball in water; then add vinegar and pour it on the white of egg, and beat until when dropped from a teaspoon it will form into shape like a bonbon. --Fruit and Candies
    Try not to over beat the egg white or the candy mixture. If over-beat, the candy will not have its characteristic density or lightness. Practice makes perfect.

    Buckeye Kisses Recipe
    Beat the whites of four small eggs to a high, firm froth, then stir into it half a pound pulverized sugar, flavour with essence lemon or rose, continue to beat until very light; then drop half the size of an egg, and a little more


    than an inch apart, on well-buttered letter paper; lay the paper on a half-inch board and place in a hot oven; watch, and as soon as they begin to look yellowish take them out; or, beat to a stiff froth the whites of two eggs, stirring into them very gradually two teacups powdered sugar and two tablespoons cornstarch; bake on buttered tins fifteen minutes in a warm oven, or until slightly brown.

    the above is a pretty common israeli candy, which is called neshikot (kisses in hebrew), and is most commonly found without rose or lemon. I don't like rose or lemon, so i would do without,this is great for little kids, since you can color it with food coloring as found in israel stores, be careful not to burn it, it burns easily[/li][/list]

    above image is not mine, from internet and i edited it..
    though i did make that same bark a while ago, and with the mixture of white chocolate, dark, milk and baking chocolate, it tasted like kinder eggs!

    need to find a recipe for bueno... help?

    Oh WOW!  I was born in Carbondale, and although I attended the Catholic and Baptist churches, (long story on why the 2) in the summer, the Baptist, the Methodist, and I think the Presbyterian churches shared services, so that the ministers could have vacations.  I wound up marrying a man who went to the Methodist church.  My mother in law was famous for her Welsh cookies, which she made by the hundreds with the women of the Methodist church for fund raisers.  I'd LOVE to see more recipes from this book.. any chance you could pm some to me?

    i'll see if i can find some, i found this site that gives you candy recipes, and they are all excerpts from books they have, like that book, their mothers hand made recipe book, etc..
    i'll see if i can find some..
