Love this idea!
however, is there another alternative to coconut oil? what other oils would work?
I've actually made it using vegetable shortening too and it worked just fine. I prefer the coconut oil though.

Can I use a starch other than corn, like tapioca?
I have such an allergy to corn that even the starch gives me a bad reaction.
You can use arrowroot powder instead of corn starch.

I've been wanting to make my own deodorant so badly lately. I've just not decided on which recipe, but this one sounds best - Especially because you can put it in a regular empty store container! I've been looking really hard for tea tree oil. Once I get it I will definitely try this!

I just made some my seven year old daughter (yes, sadly she needs it already) and it works great. Thank you for sharing.

The easiest to get coconut oil is coconut 76...it melts at 76 degrees, usually stays hard in the winter and is more or less super soft/liquid in the summer.
I haven't tried this recipe, but if you want to use a liquid oil, you could probably add some palm stearic (stearic acid) which is a hard, kind of waxy flake that is basically the "hard" part from solid oils. Just melt together and when it cools it will harden up. It's used in thickening creams and lotions.
I would think adding a little beeswax would work, too, instead of the stearic acid... in case you can't find the other...

I didn't have a dehydrator when I made mine, either. I stuck it in the oven on warm/low for about 15 minutes. Worked out just fine.
