Just out of the kiln, my new carved platter.

The eel design was inspired by an old woodblock print. I carved it into red cone 6 clay and glazed the plate with a transparent gray glaze. It's electric fired.

Comments? Critique?

To be honest, I don't quite like this piece. I think the clay is too dark. Or maybe it's the glaze that's too dark. Maybe they're both too dark! (My BFF does like it, though, so I'm going to give it to him.)

I've never seen anything quite like this in clay. It looks like it's carved from wood. cool.

I very much like it, and would be very proud if I ever managed to make that! And I don't think it's too dark, the colors tie in nicely with the idea of the woodcut. Very nice! Cheesy

Thanks, all!  Smiley I appreciate the positive feedback. I guess when I pulled it out of the kiln, it was a case of expectations not matching outcome...but thanks for the positivity!  Smiley

Oh wow, this is stunning. I agree with everyone else, it doesn't look like clay at all. I think it's really great, very unique and is about as beautiful as an eel can get Wink

Again, stunning!

I think it's absolutely incredible.

Without the description, I could have spent a long time guessing the material.  At first I thought it was leather, then wood, then a metal belt buckle...  To me, that makes it extra intriguing.

Funny, no? A lot of people guess the same thing at the material(s) (from the photo anyway--in person, it's very much a clay platter Smiley

That really is gorgeous, and I agree totally with Maldania that the clay and glaze colours are exactly right for the woodblock print style. How big is it?

Thanks, kind peeps! Smiley

Wulf, as far as the size goes, it's 8.5 x 12.5 inches. So that's not huge for a platter, I think.

It's really cool. I like how the color and shine of the background reflects the eel that's dark and slimy. Kinda like a screen cap off of those deep sea documentaries. I'm jealous of your friend!  Cheesy

I like the color. It's dark in the murky hiding places they choose. I like the face too.
