I just wanted to tell you that though I never joined this thread I also made a spindle that I never would have if it wasn't for this thread! The WHOLE family tried their hand at spinning (mind that my dds are really small though - 2,5 and 1 year old and note that whole family means my MALE included!!! He wanted to try!!! Shocked Grin) I hope you are quite proud now Wink. I know our finished yarn is terrible but I'm still happy because we had such a good time and because my dds saw something and learned how to do something that I think most kids never even imagine how it's done Grin.
You can find my spindle here:

And my finished yarn here:

I'd love to hear (well, read actually) what you think!

So I'm a bit bummed this topic had to be put on hold.. but I went on and continued teaching myself based off of Jane Doe's great tutorial. I'm participating in the DIY Craft Kit swap and had to make a drop spindle tutorial for one of my swappers, so I figured I'd post it here.
Drop Spindle Tutorial @ ThinkCraftyThoughts

It's not nearly as good as Jane Doe's stuff has been, but I think it's a good jumping off point for anyone looking to start spinning. I assume in the tutorial that you have drop spindle already, mainly cause I included one in the package I sent to Mlsocci74, heh.

Hey guys! How is everyone? Still spinning I hope.  Grin

I just thought I'd say that I am putting a call out for experienced spinners to help with the next lesson. I don't know if anyone has talked to Jane but I can't get a hold of her. I know that people wanted to move on. I've talked to a mod and we are going to go ahead and keep going.

So keep hanging on and we'll get it figured out! If anyone wants to help or has tips, PM me. sewmamalady

You can spin cotton balls and hairdresser's rayon!  A spindle can cost less than $5 to make, then hit up the dollar store or beauty supply shop.  Srsly. Grin
Cotton balls?!? Please, do tell!  Coz Im out of roving!

Please please please post what to do after you've begun spinning! So many of the tutorials show the whole "Draft, make a leader, wind around the hook, spin spindle"... and that's where the tutorials end. Sad

I'm sure other tutorials have more instructions, but it's so hard having to look and pick and learn from so many different tutorials and explanations (I know each has their own special instruction to teach me, but it gets confusing!)

Can't wait until this tutorial is complete! Also can't wait for my spindle to arrive!!
