Here is a great group off of ravelry that create thier own spindles, so you don't have to have a CD spindle if that's not your thing, there is a whole thread of 35 pages of hand made spindles and advise on making the whorls with different mediums.  I've been inspired to make a few of my own now.

The only reason I haven't learned how to spin is because it seems too expensive. PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT SPINNING ON A BUDGET!!!! I wanna learn!

I've wanted to learn how to spin for awhile. I want to make a coat out of my dog, but not in a scary way. He sheds soooo much and its soft and fluffy.

You can spin cotton balls and hairdresser's rayon!  A spindle can cost less than $5 to make, then hit up the dollar store or beauty supply shop.  Srsly. Grin
