Calling on craftsters to donate new, gently used, or crafted stuffed animals to Haitian children.
I know everyone has seen and heard heart-wrenching accounts of the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti earlier this week, and I couldn't help but want to do something!

Many charities are accepting donations of money, food, clothing, medical supplies and help, and I know these things are important. I also think it's important to remember that many of these children and people have lost more than their homes and possessions. They've lost comfort, security, and sometimes they've lost the very people that used to hold on to them when they were in distress.

Now, you won't find "Hugs for Haiti" in an internet search. I'm just a local Iowa girl trying to lend a helping hand; my church has connections with an orphanage in Haiti and everything will be sent from there.

Accepting donations through February 14th. Please send a bit of love!

this is a good idea!  kind of like Pan y Rosas (the women workers protested, "we need bread but we also need roses"), quality of life sort of thing.

will try to send some.  they don't have to be handmade, right? (i kind of fail at stuffies)
was thinking to hit the ikea stuffies section -they have really cute stuffies at good prices- so, can send more for the same money.

nataluna - no, they don't have to be handmade! i picked up a bunch of them at goodwill for $.88 (i inspected them pretty good first, them washed 'em for good measure).

Are you only taking stuffed animals or other toys and dolls?  Trying to gather a few things now.    Smiley

thank you all so much!

probably only soft toys... better for smaller children and easier to ship without getting broken.

spread the word to all your friends! i'm at 31 and counting....

i have a half-box packed and going to check my stash for any unloved and also undamaged stuffies.

mentioned your effort on another site and a buddy there had this idea for you:
Quote
[...] that's such a cool thing to do! She should consider checking with Hallmark stores and the like... you have to find just the right manager willing to do it, but twice we've gotten one to donate leftover unsold holiday stuffies to a children's hospital. They have to remove the tags and do something to show they can't be returned or whatever, and may have to get corporate's permission to do it, but it's worth asking.

most of 'mine' were kindly donated by one of my supervisors.  just to be fair and give credit where due...

Hi Meg -
I was very happy to participate in this project and sent a few little fleece bears that I made.  I'm wondering what kind of response you got and if you've had the chance to send the stuffed toys you received to Haiti yet?

thanks for the interest!

i received four boxes from Craftster people, all very kind and generous, and another four large boxes from my dad's workplace, and another two boxes from some of my local friends. i just talked with the pastor this past week and i'll be dropping them at our church this sunday. our church has connections with one of the orphanages down there, so the next time they go on a mission trip those little guys will be right on their way!

thanks to everyone!
