Wrapping an awkwardly shaped stone

How do you wrap a weirdly shaped stone such as this? I think the maker of the necklace used wire. Is that possible? How does it look all...soldered like that?

i might be totally off the mark but could it be they used silver clay not wire?

Yeah, that one doesn't look like wire, and I have no idea how to do that. But here's a couple of tutorials on doing wire wraps for stones that might give you a springboard:

looks like it's been 'dipped' in melted solder. Definatley not wire wrapped.
