The scarf that started life as a bag...

A story of crochet reincarnation:

I started making a bag (Priscilla Hewitt's Summer Sling Tote) for a friend of mine. It looked like this

when I realized that there was no way it would hold up as a bag. The sides were lopsided, floppy, and just all around un-bag-like. Dismayed, I frogged the two sides and decided to make something more suitable for the yarn I was using (Wool-Ease Chunky). I decided on a zig-zag scarf and, not happy with any of the zig-zag scarf patterns I found, ended up modifying a zig-zag afghan pattern (Susan B's Easy Ripple Afghan, found here: http://home.att.net/~susanBinKC/patterns/ripple.html). My first shot at it looked like this:

At this length, the scarf began looking way too wide. It was from an afghan pattern, after all...so once again I frogged hours of dc stitches. I had cut the yarn at each color change, and ended up with many short pieces of the balls of yarn I had started with. I modified the already-modified pattern to half the width, added a fringe, and ended up with this:

*whew!*  Great job!  I might have just taken those little balls of yarn and thrown them out the window by that point.  I admire your dedication, and the finished result is wonderful!  Way to be patient, dedicated and thrifty!!

  It's a nice scarf with a good design. But I think it rocks just because of the dedication you showed to the finished pattern. you didn't give up and you didn't waste your yarn! Good  job!

it may have taken a couple tries, but it was obviously totally worth it! the resulting scarf is wicked cute, and it looks great on you!

This is very cute for as simple as it probably was to make (not counting the previous first two tries).  I have quite a bit of patience for finishing projects that take awhile but have very little patience for tearing stuff out and redoing it, so I applaud your efforts

It's a pretty simple finished project, but knowing all the work you went through to get it there makes it really spectacular!  Great job persevering through all the troubles!
