Okay, here's the tutorial for my awesome pen holder. Wink I took better photos for it and added a step or two.

Materials:

-A Steel Can
-Tissue Paper
-Brown paper lunch bags (or unwanted wrapping paper)
-Mod Podge
-Scissors
-White Paint
-Paintbrush
-Food coloring
-Spray Sealer
-Pliers
-Glitter
-Beaded trim (Optional, but if you like bling, go ahead and use it. Haha)
-Something to mix the paint in
-Fabric Paint

What You Do:

1.Take your clean steel can and bend the sharp inner rim down with pliers. Cans with pull tab tops have this but the cans that you open with a can opener just have a little sharp piece that can be bent down with pliers. After you get the rim bent down, cover it with a layer of tissue paper. I used tissue paper left over from other projects for this tutorial, but you can use unwanted wrapping paper if your recycling center doesn't take it. I like to use Progresso soup cans or Dole pineapple cans for these pen holders because they're sturdy. If you can't find those, though, any sturdy steel can with a pull top will do.  Smiley

Can covered with tissue pieces.

2.Cut your paper lunch sack into rectangles and glue onto your can. These don't have to be perfect, as they're going to be covered up with paint anyway.

Can that's ready for paint.

3.Take the tissue paper that's going to be glued over the layer of paint and cut it into pieces. For this tutorial, I used teal paint and tissue paper. Mix the appropriate amount of food coloring into your paint. For teal, that happens to be 10-15 drops of green, and 10 of blue. Paint over the brown paper.

Paint all mixed and ready to go. (I used an old Garnier Nutrisse conditioner container for this tutorial, because it has a lid. You can use whatever you have though, just make sure it has a lid so your paint doesn't dry out.)

First coat of paint. (The paint I used for this tutorial is kind of thin, so I had to do two coats.)

Second coat of paint. It looks stripy here because the middle wasn't totally dry when I took the photo. Tongue

4.Take the tissue paper and do a second coat on your pen holder. This is easier if you start from the inside and go from there. When the inside is covered, let it dry and then do the outside. After it is totally dry, paint it with a layer of Mod Podge. Let this dry. Here's the one I made for the tutorial after I did the second coat of Mod Podge, added glitter, and sealed it. Shweet, no? Grin

I know it's kind of hard to see here, but the sealer is really shiny.

5.Heres the cool part. You can now customize the pen holder for whoever youre making it for or make it for yourself. If youre keeping it for yourself paint it with whatever color you like. If its for a friend, paint it with their favorite color and add paper cutouts of things theyre into (Such as guitars or dogs), if you like. The beauty of this is you can do whatever you like with it and it still turns out beautifully. When the paint is dry, you can take it outside and seal it with spray sealer. Make sure you do several coats. When thats dry, give it to your friend or keep it. (For this tutorial I did green with glitter.)

(Extreme angles FTW! Wink)

I hope to see the pen holders you all make with this tutorial! I'm sure y'all will come up with some cool ones.  Cool Happy upcycling! Grin

Thanks! I am too-and it drives me nuts when people have the opportunity to do it and don't.  Angry Just this morning I discovered my sister threw away perfectly good tissue paper.

I haven't made one, I have an awesome old small glass ice bucket I use for pens.  But yours is very pretty, and your tutorial explains how to make one very well.
