UPDATED: Educational protest signs (IMAGE HEAVY)

My second-semester theme for my English II classes is activism, so I am decorating my classroom in a 1960s/socially conscious motif. As part of that effort, I created some "protest signs" today to put on bulletin boards around the room. All of them relate to concepts or books we study in class.

(Apologies for the sucky photo quality; I was too lazy to get out my good camera for this, and I shot these after they were laminated, so the overhead light created a horrible glare on some of them.)


Antigone gets the Leonard Peltier treatment.


Definition of a simple sentence: 1 subject + 1 verb, the way God intended. (Look it up -- it's right there in Leviticus. I think.)  


Calling out Shakespeare's corrupt King Claudius.


A little obscure, but I thought it was funny.


It's an English teacher joke. Get it? Up ... with ... prepositions ... ah, never mind.

I think that and the definition of a simple sentence are the funniest. I'm actually going to let the kids stage an anti-Claudius rally when we read Hamlet. We'll have protest signs and speeches and everything. I might even try to sweet-talk the principal into playing Claudius so he can try to rally his own supporters and get some counterprotesters to defend him. He's a former English teacher, so I'm sure he'll be game if he can work it into his schedule.

Hee, those are awesome. I think the Fortinbras one is my favorite. And I want to attend the anti-Claudius rally. And I want "Free Antigone" on a shirt.

The simple sentence one is definitely my favorite, although the visual on the "Free Antigone" one cracks me up. I actually swiped that idea from a hilarious T-shirt I bought when Martha Stewart was in prison. It was laid out like the poster, except it said "FREE MARTHA" and had a stylized picture of her face in the middle. I still think it's the funniest thing I've ever owned. I don't recall what I did with it when it wore out, but I'm really hoping it's in my recon bag so I can use it in a quilt or something....

Brilliant!  I shared the link to your blog with several teacher friends.  I'm a science teacher and you have inspired me to think up some clever science signage.

Flower: You might go through the Chuck Norris Facts. I think some of them make reference to various scientific principles. I've been using them to teach hyperbole in my classes, and the kids love them. Thinkgeek.com also has some funny T-shirts and stuff that might make good fodder for that sort of thing ("Gravity: It's not just a good idea; it's the law" comes to mind), and the Mensa Boutique sometimes has clever T-shirt slogans. My favorite is still the one that says, "There are 10 kinds of people in the world: those who get binary, and those who don't."
