For a friend's birthday, I made her an Utena cosplay to wear to the geeky awesome conventions we go to together. Utena is her favorite anime, so I thought it would be appropriate.

Here she is attacking me with a kitchen knife Grin

The main part of it is the jacket. It's the base of the costume.

The back

The jacket itself is made of navy twill with red bias tape.

But the really fun part of the jacket is that it is convertible. Utena wears this jacket as her school uniform but then when she goes to duel, it transforms slightly into this:

I made the epaulettes, chain, ruffle, and cuffs removable so that the jacket could be worn both ways.

Removable stuff removed:

I attached the "chain" to the top button of the jacket with a felt button cover hot-gued onto the back of the charm at the top of the chain.

The ruffle attaches to the inside of the jacket with snap buttons above each of the vents and the cuffs attach with velcro on the inside of the jacket sleeves.

But I am particularly proud of the epaulets. I made them using half-sphere foam pieces used for flower arranging and a thin layer of paper mache on there to make it smooth. Then I pulled some shiny red stretch fabric over it to make it, well, shiny and red. After that, I hot glued the gold lame on there and then all the little tasselly bits, then a circular piece of felt to cover all the glue. Sewed to the circular piece of felt is a little sleeve so that the epaulet can fit over the little band on the shoulder of the jacket.

But possibly my favorite thing about the jacket are the four buttons on the front. I decoupaged the Rose Crest from the show onto them and I really like the way they came out. It's the little things, you know?

This looks wonderful! It's obvious that your friend really likes it. I'm sure plenty of people at those geeky awesome conventions will want to take pictures of her. I'm bookmarking this thread for cosplay inspiration. Smiley
