This is such an awesome transformation! I have a Focus and am thinking about giving it a few "personal" touches. Please keep us informed about the wear & tear of that Krylon paint Smiley

I did mine in run-of-the-mill Ace Hardware brand spray paint, and it lasted for years.

Updated again. I've added chalkboard paint to the back and a painting to the side, along with a Grateful Dead quotation.

It just keeps getting better and better! The chalkboard is a really brilliant idea. I wonder how well it'll withstand sun and rain. Do you have a way of keeping a piece of chalk handy for passers-by, or do people have to bring their own? If I knew I might encounter your car, I'd always carry a piece of chalk!

The chalk wears off in the rain, of course, but I take pictures periodically so the messages are recorded for posterity. I'm planning to put them in a little scrapbook or something that I can take to appropriate venues.

I bought one of those plastic soap dishes (the travel kind with the little lid that snaps shut) and stuck magnets to the back of it. It's just big enough to accommodate a box of colored chalk. I take it off if I know I'm going to be driving over a rough road or at very high speeds, but I keep it on there when the car is parked and when I'm driving around town. Some of my students have used it and thought it was wonderful.

The paint didn't take long to apply, so if the chalkboard starts to look worn-out, I can give it a fresh coat easily enough.

The thought of you driving down Route 66 with a soapdish of chalk stuck onto the back of your car makes me very happy! Grin I hadn't thought about the rain washing your chalkboard for you - very practical. What sort of things do people write?

Let's see ... my students have signed their names, played tic-tac-toe, quoted Lewis Carroll, and drawn various symbols (mostly hearts and peace signs, but one kid drew a phallus, which I promptly erased), and written such messages as "Drive in peace," "You're awesome," "2010 for the win," "Haha I wrote on your car!" and "Here drives the best teacher." A random stranger wrote "The Real Rock-n-rolla." A colleague quoted Einstein. And a little boy whose parents own a restaurant on Route 66 drew me a picture of Spongebob Squarepants.

I had to explain to my principal that the back of the car is actually a chalkboard after another teacher got onto some of my kids for writing on it. You can imagine his reaction when I told him I'd given my students permission to write on the back of my car. Between that and my beekeeping hobby, I think he is now completely convinced that I am clinically insane.  Roll Eyes
