I'm a geeky history student, so quite a lot of my baking/crafting is history-related. Hence, I give you: The Gingerbread Nunnery

It's built in the shape of a late medieval cruciform English church, the nuns' habits are reasonably accurate (well, as close as you can get in inch-high icing sculptures) renditions of late medieval Benedictine habits. I'd love to pretend that the building is a bit wonky because the religious houses of late medieval nuns were chronically under-endowed and usually falling to bits (poor nuns!), but actually it's wonky because it was made in a college kitchen shared with about 60 other people. Some rotter actually took it off my baking tray while it was in the oven so they could use the try to cook chips! The cheek of it.

Another view:

Pigs! Nunnery estates often had their own poultry and livestock, to make ends meet. Contrary to the popular image, they were generally extremely poor.

Nuns in procession!

(you can tell the abbess by her crozier)

I'm rather proud of the nuns, they're rather sweet.

A view from the back:

But hey, who's that I spy, hiding behind a tree?

Naughty nun! Whatever is she up to?

(based on an actual nun in one of my Lincoln visitation records, who gave birth in the nunnery after getting a bit too close to an Augustinian Brother down the road...)

Hope you enjoyed, c&c much appreciated Smiley

Wow. This is awesome. I love that it is a gingerbread house- but also a model- I especially love the little nun and brother behind the bushes. Very cute and especially impressive since it was made in a shared kitchen Smiley

Amazing! I really, really like this. Especially since you  made it in a share kitchen.

The vines are enough decoration for the actual building, and the nuns (and brother) are a lovely touch. I hope you win!

This made me think of Boccacio's Decameron immediately, with it's naughty nuns and friars. And it was made in a student kitchen? That really is a miracle! It's fabulous

Hello,

thanks everyone! It was my first time making gingerbread since I was a little girl (when I suspect my mum actually did most of the baking, and I did most of the eating), so it was a bit of a challenge, but I think it turned out pretty good, considering.

I did consider making the nun and brother a bit more risque, but I made it as a gift for my supervisor and his family (he is a really nice man), so it had to be kid-friendly! He's read my thesis, he'll know what it's about...

Thanks again for all your kind comments!

Ha ha! Brilliant and very beautifully done. The little pigs had me giggling and the nuns add so much charm to the piece. I love the vine details on the walls. AWESOME job and it's even more impressive that you cooked it in a college kitchen!

That is fantastic, great job! I can't believe someone would remove your house to bake chips. They took it out of the oven while it was hot? That's crazy. I love the pigs and the nuns, so cute. Why does the nun in the front right have her hand on her hip (if that's what she is doing)?
