hi everyone!

when i read about the gingerbread challenge, i just had to enter (my first challenge :-) )
of course, my boyfriend helped me (he cut most of the parts and supervised the oven. we filled a lot of baking trays :-P)

but i had to set a few exra-rules:

rule #1: it has to be portable, as i travelled home for christmas
i decided to do a village, as little houses are easier to store in a box for hours of driving on mountain roads.
rule #2: it has to taste good, because throwing food away is not an option for me.
as in my family gingerbread has to taste like gingerbread, i could not use lots of candy or frosting. i just used marzipan and a little sugar icing

pictures:

close ups:

i planned to place the tiny house in front of the trees, but in the end there was no space left. poor little house :-(

"making of" so you can see that i REALLY made it myself. first cake decorating project! jay.

everything before assembling. i counted more than 60 gingerbread parts
(the stars will become the trees later)

everything waiting to be decorated

paaainting! i felt like a little kid playing with watercolours Cheesy
and the gingerbread tastes just slightly sugary with a hint of white rum. yum.

thanks for looking,
have a great year 2010!

I love the idea of painting on the gingerbread--it gives it a nice folkartsy look!  What did you use for it?

:-D thanks.
i think i like the antiqued look a lot.

i used a tablespoon of icing (lemon juice and powdered sugar)
mixed with a few drops of food colour and about half an eggcup of white rum
you know. if the food colour thinks it should taste like food colour, the rum will still be stronger :-P.

and it dries very fast, so the gingerbread won't soak the liquid up

That is seriously cool! I love the gingerbread village idea- I actually did one for my secret santa gift at work this year, but yours turned out waaaaay better! Love the idea of not over decorating and painting it too! Very well done!

Just too adorable! I love how you've painted them, and the star tree is a great addition.

This is so cute!  I love how the houses are kind of "puffy"...it is hard to explain but, the way the walls are not "straight" but kind of bow out just a bit...they remind me of "hello kitty" or something...kind of like cartoon houses?!  Anyway, I LOVE them and I think you did a terrific job!

I really like this one! Eating it would be more like eating gingerbread.

I'm not so much a fan of 'take gingerbread, cover with sweets'. This one is more subtle and I reckon that's a good thing. Seriously, this is my favourite so far.

And, the gingerbread is nice and thick. Can I have a little nibble? Just a roof, or a tree, or the little house?  Cheesy

thank you Smiley

i like, that i can eat it, as i think that gingerbread tastes horrible when there's too much sugar on it.

but it seems to me, that sweets are more sugary in the US (and Mexico)
even coca cola tastes sweeter than european coca cola  Roll Eyes

There is something so enchanting about this style of gingerbread.  It looks very sophisticated in a simple sort of way that is catchy and interesting.  Very well done!
