Happy New Year, everyone! My parents have a New Years Day family party instead of a Christmas party--(because December is just too busy) and we have a little treasure chest that we put little gifts in for the kids. This is my contribution this year for my youngest. Her pockets are smaller, but these ricewarmers should fit snugly inside of a regular coat pocket for those cold winter days.
Here's the pattern!
Supplies
Sport weight yarn—I used red Heart Sport for the hamster, and baby yarn for the frog.
Size E crochet hook
1 size small (6-10 ½ ) girls bobby sock
jasmine rice or whatever rice you have on hand
All details must be embroidered on. DO NOT USE SAFETY EYES FOR THIS PROJECT!! They will melt! Plus the metal backs won’t do so well in the microwave, either.
Start with the filling: Fill the sock with about 5” of rice, then sew twice across the sock opening at about the 6” line. Cut off the excess sock at top. Set aside.
Cover
1. ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook
2. (2 sc in each sc) around (12 sc)
3. (sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) around (18 sc)
4. (sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around (24 sc)
5. (sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around (30 sc)
6. (sc in each sc) around (30 sc)
7. Repeat row 6 until you have a cover long enough to fit the entire sock. If you are making a hamster, make 9 rows of white, then switch colors and continue with the next color until you have a cover long enough to fit the entire sock. Keep checking by placing the sock inside the cover as you go. Leave the sock in place for the next step.
8. in back loops only, (sc in next 3 sc, decrease over 2 sc) around (24 sc)
9. in both loops again, (sc in next 2 sc, decrease over 2 sc) around (18 sc)
10. (sc in next sc, decrease over 2 sc) around (12 sc)
11. (decrease over 2 sc) around (6 sc)
12. sl st in next st, finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
13. Whipstitch opening closed, hide end.
Ears/Eyes (make 2)
1. ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook.
2. (sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc ) around (9 sc)
3-4. (sc in each sc) around (9 sc)
5. sl st in next st, finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
6. flatten and pin the Ears/Eyes to top of head and sew in place.
Arms/Legs (make 4)
1. ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook.
2. (sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc ) around (9 sc)
3-6. (sc in each sc) around (9 sc)
7. sl st in next st, finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
8. Stuff the arms/legs with scraps of yarn. Press the opening flat and whipstitch closed across the top.
9. Sew the arms to the sides and the legs along the back loop only row at the bottom. Hide ends.
Add embroidered details.
Microwave on high for about 1 minute. Times may vary depending on microwaves. Never warm them for more than 90 seconds, to avoid burns.
You can make other animals by changing the colors or adding other small details. You can also use this pattern to make plain beanie dolls using the plastic filler beads if you don't plan to microwave them. Have fun!
