You can use cement blocks to plant in for a quick and cheap garden...I have a whole bunch of stuff growing out of them: sedum, hens & chicks, coreopsis, thrift, etc.  Fill with dirt, sprinkle seeds or put in a couple of plants...also, inexpensive planters make for a quick and easy garden--I think Walmart carries the long kind for about $6.00. Go to yard sales and look for tubs or buckets as well...there are so many inexpensive and apartment friendly ways to have a garden! Fresh flowers are a bonus come fall!

I'm jealous of everyone doing yard work! The weather here hasn't allowed it!  First we got more snow, then it's been raining for the last three days.  Today is the first day of sunshine in about a week and I'm stuck inside studying and writing a term paper!!
I know! Im so jealous of all the people here who have been able to do outdoor projects for awhile now...Weve been having the wonkiest weather in Saskatchewan lately...last weekend it was so windy that a building had to be evacuated in Regina because it was moving and then like 3 days later its raining non stop! Its kind of nice out today....Id love to get a start on out door stuff today...if I had outdoor stuff to do...unfotunetly for me I have to wait for greenhouse's to open so I can get plants for my projects Sad I may try making some planters today though, kind of along the lines of what you guys are talking about, ones from pop bottles.

Ok, here's another item off my list.

13. Try to make something from barn woodDONE 4/16/10

It's a nest box for a barn swallow, and it's made from free barn wood.  I've made six of them and I intend to put them up in various places on my property.

I'm up to 11/50

Pinokeeo--one thing for sure...you have the most interesting projects!  what a nice way to use something and help out the birds--so much of the natural shelter and habitat is being eaten up!

I don't think we have swallows here...but I have seen them...do they nest right on the platform?  How high do you have to mount them?

They have to be at least 6-8 feet off the ground.  Swallows will nest on any flat surface that is high up, which is why I'm making the nest boxes.  This way maybe they will stop nesting on my outside light. Cheesy

For whatever reason, we are the destination for Canada geese in the winter and barn swallows in the summer.  I love it though, because when I'm mowing, the swallows will fly around my head and catch any bugs that I dislodge.  And they have the nicest little chitter when they're excited.
