I taught myself to knit and have been doing pretty well with it.  My problem right now is my ribbing... and well, in turn my cabling too.  What's wrong: Say I'm using a 2x2 rib, the stitch on the right looks perfectly fine, but the stitch on the left is loose and slightly open.  I have tried holding the yarn tighter for the second stitch and just keeping the tension even all across and still end up with the same problem.  It also effects my cabling.  No matter how nice it is, the final stitch on the left is too loose and just makes everything look stupid.  Is this something that I just have to keep working on and will eventually fix? If I wash it, will the yarn even its self out (I'm using acrylics right now until I find something I actually do well enough to use my wool with)?  I have also tried pulling the finished off piece in all different directions but, it just goes back after it relaxes for awhile.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you so much for your time.

Picture added:
It's a bad picture, but you can see on the column where the needle points, my ribs have a space in them.  This is a 1x1 rib, when I do a 2x2 rib, of the two knit stitches facing me, the one on the left is always open like these are but the one on the right is always nice and tight.  Hope that helps some.
