What would be a good backdrop alternate to an archway?  We are getting married in a hall and I think the archway thing tends to look goofy.  Anyone got ideas?

Either 2 big potted plants (or small potted trees like ficus) flanking the officiant, or one even bigger one behind the officiant.

I think chuppahs are great and can be really lovely, who says you have to be jewish to get married under one?

Kind of traditional, but you can always do 2 large floral arrangements flanking the area for the ceremony.

Do you have a photo of the archway to post?  I bet it would stir up a little more ideas from our ginormous creative minds!

I think the potted plants idea sounds great... I would actually use some (fake) ornately shaped ivy or rose covered topiaries to flank- either the  spirally shaped ones, or ones with different size round balls. You could add to these if too plain... tiny white lights, ribbons, etc. the taller the better. Or what about a couple of those fake ficus trees from wal-mart, with tiny white/colored lights or wedding ornaments of some sort. (doves, swans, hearts, whatever your style). If you felt like spending the $, you could have several topiaries lining both sides of your aisle, linked together by bows and draping ribbons, or in a horseshoe shape behind you two and the official.

I was once at a wedding a couple weeks before x-mas and they had fake x-mas trees flanking, decorated in their colors which were burgundy, ivory, and gold. In my own winter wedding, the official stood before a big x-mas tree my mom had decorated with dusty rose and irridescent white, and I wore burgundy.

Or, maybe some of those greek/corinthian column style pedestals, a little over waist high, maybe with cascading flower arrangements atop each one. You can get the plain plaster ones at places like hobby lobby and paint them yourself. There's even marble type spay paint in several different colors.

Finally, if you were feeling really ambitious, maybe a canopy type thing hung from the ceiling. You could make a huge circle or oval hoop using thick wire wrapped with batting, inserted into a casing- then make the drapings from some gauze (or tulle, but gauze would be more original) like you would make curtains with a casing, inserting the covered wire in that, leaving a large opening for you two and the official to be seen inside. All that hung with ribbons and bedecked with other ribbons and maybe flowers.

(if I ever get my ten-year "renewal of vows wedding" that I want, I'm gonna go with an archway- but completely bedecked with holly and ivy, red velvet ribbons and gold bells, and borrowing somone's little girl to be my flower girl dressed like a snow fairy. Hey, it could happen.)
