I made lumps of coal cookies today (along with so so so many more cookies - I went through almost 2 dozen eggs and 6 lbs of butter, etc etc.....)

I took a ginger/nut snowball cookie, and added black colouring paste to the egg/sugar mixture before adding the flour mixture, then pressed in black decorative sugar before baking.

Edited to add recipe:
Nope - they did not colour my teeth - though I only had one.  When I rolled the cookies, I was pretty impressed that they barely tinted my hands, and the colour washed out right away.  It was made with the Wilton colour gel which comes in black.  I just used a ginger nut snowball recipe because I thought the chopped ginger and nuts would add a bit of coal-like texture and sparkle when bit open - but any cookie that maintains a rounded shape would do.  I contemplated doing it with a pfeffernusse recipe too - since it has anise flavouring, but it did not have the nut/chopped ginger texture to it (though it could if I played with it).

Here is the recipe:
1 cup room temp butter
1 1/2 cup icing sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
2 1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup ground nuts (walnut, almond, or pecan)
1/3 cup finely chopped candied ginger
1 tsp baking powder
2 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground allspice
1/2 tsp salt

Cream together butter and sugar until fluffy.  Add egg and vanilla and beat in to blend well.  At this point I added the black colouring - I estimate that it was probably about 1/8th of a tsp of the gel paste, perhaps a bit more.  Sift together 1 1/2 cup flour, the spices, nuts, and ground ginger.  Add to sugar mixture and mix to blend, adding in remaining flour.  Wrap dough in plastic and refrigerate until firm.  Preheat oven to 350F.  Roll into balls (after rolling in black sugar) and place on lined cookie sheet about 2 inches apart and bake for 12 minutes.  If treating as traditional snowballs, rolling powdered sugar and cool on rack.

I know I could! Especially if they smelled like ginger or anise!
Flashback... when I was 5 my mom one day decided to make Green Eggs and ham... If you have a memory for Dr. Suess Children's books... "Who
will try Green Eggs And Ham"? I thought when she said she was making them... it's only food coloring. But when she actually put that stuff on the plate... It was too sick to look at, let alone eat!
But, I think I could handle these cookies!
Thanks for posting the recipie! I'm giving it to Mom!

Any cookie would work - it just a matter of using the black colouring and sprinkles Cheesy

I don't know if Walmart would carry it.  I bought it at Bulk Barn, a Canadian chain that carries a lot of cake making and decorating supplies.  They have a very good selection of liquid and paste colourings.  It's made by Wilton, so if you know of a place that carries Wilton gel/paste colourings, they should have it.

Michaels Arts and Crafts carry Wilton supplies, as well any specialty baking supplier. I believe they have thier own website too, I'll have to ask Mom if it can be ordered.

How fun would it be to make the same it white and then these in the black. Put them in treat baggies labled nauty and nice and then pass them out to friends. I'm sure the nice would go quickly or you could give someone one bag of each! Letting them know they are the same cookie! Neat idea for next year!

Love this idea so much - I am doing this with Oreo Truffles (crushed Oreos mixed with cream cheese) and rolled in black sanding sugar.

Would be interested to know how you packaged them for gifiting. I think mine will be for stocking stuffers since I have so many presents already I want to make.

I had cello bags and curling ribbon, since I had lots of different types of candies and cookies to package.  I put everything into cello bags, and nestled them into serving platters, containers, or baskets, with jellies I made, whatever ornament I made for the year, teas, cocoa, etc, and then wrapped the whole shebang with basket wrap.

This is a good idea.
Easier on the teeth than candy coal, I think we'll try these instead this year.
Thanks for the recipe and idea!
