Im an absolute beginner and its like I'm almost frightened to start my project because I dont know whether to use the back stitch or the split stitch.

Which do you suggest I use?

Also, what length do you usually make your stitches?

I bought a pattern from Sublime Stitching, I cant wait to get started!

Thank you.

For my regular stitch, I love the split stitch with 2 strands.  I like the look of it, and I find it nice and easy to do.
My stitches have gotten tinier as I have gotten used to it.
Find which stitch YOU are most comfortable with and have fun!

I prefer split as well. It is versatile and easy to use. Back stitch can be a bear if your tension gets wonky. Smiley

Good luck with your embroidery piece!

I suggest using whatever feels comfortable to you. Try several styles until one feels comfortable to you.

I'm late to chime in, but I love stem stitch.  Works up really quickly, and to me it looks really graceful.  I use it for outlines a lot.  Then when I need more detail I use back stitch.

I second this one... Stem stitch is really fast and you work from one side of the fabric... Love it.

Human rights are for EVERYONE.  Did you know that Aung San Suu Kyi had been released from house arrest in Burma? Many other prisoners of conscience are still being detained.  Please research this topic... Amnesty International needs your help.

Backstitch is my favorite! Good for details, and it looks so smooth. But everyone's tastes are different! I would try a few stitches, just in plain lines on scrap fabric and see what feels best to you.

Scotch stitch! I love using scotch stitches so much, because they fill the canvas easily. My other favorite is the shell stitch.
