hello!

i really want to make my 2 boys a dig box, as at the moment they are loving trying to dig up the carpet/sofa/mattress. ive seen plenty of ideas on the internet about what materials to use for digging - but was wondering if anyone has any experience in what is best/safest?

also, have you reconstructed a box to make into a dig box - with recommended ideas on where to place the entrance, using a tunnel to get in etc?

many thanks from me, harbles and bear! (who is currently digging his way to china through the sofa  Cheesy )

i haven't had any personal experience with a ferret dig box - though i plan to make my own soon! - i'm thinking that a normal cardboard box would be cheap and hold for the job. i'm guessing it would be a good idea to place the hole on the top or have a tunnel leading in somewhere because i'm guessing you don't want rice all over your floor!  Wink

I haven't made any of these but what a great idea! I'd suggest A tunnel for the entrance as ferrets seem to love burrowing. The shredded paper could be a great idea for a use for that junk mail. and if it gets dirty or smelly just recycle it. Smiley

I made mine a shreded paper one using a cardboard box for the box portion. One of mine wanted to use it as a litter box, the other two played in it for about a week before they lost interest.

I tried packaging peanuts but they just tried to steal them all, which was amusing until I had to clean them all up.

The favorite "dig box" of my one ferret, Sugar, was our indoor bananana plant. So dirt and a plastic container were the favorite, lol.

They also like to dig in my fabric scrap box, they make a little cozy nest for naps.

lol look at all of us with our ferret avatars!!  Cheesy

just an update here:

i bought them some new flexi-tubes (which they LOVE) and they arrived in a huge cardboard box. so i cut a hole tight enough to put the flexi tube in one side, and they have a great time running in and out of the box. i put rice in there but only one of them (Harbles) went in when he got excited, so ive put an old duvet in the box.....which is now their new hideyhole/cosy bed! i way prefer them sleeping in there when they're out of the cage (as opposed to behind the sofa) and for the moment its also stash central - so i know where to find my socks/embroidery/wallet  Cheesy

i love the idea of junk mail tho - i'm deffo gonna give that one a go  Smiley
