Hello craftsters!

I've been trying to revive the lost art of mixtaping...

So I made an 'Anger Management Mix' for one of my far flung friends, it's a collection various chill out songs.

Anyhoo, I made a case for the mix cds using some funky wallpaper and cardboard.

I think it turned out pretty nifty...

the front...

the inside...

the outside...

Hope you guys like it!

**********************************
2 years later...
The long awaited tutorial has finally arrived. Sorry about the ludicrous delay, I obviously was pretty absent-minded in 2005, and erm 2006 the spring and summer of 2007

Anyhoo here goes, sorry that I couldnt condense it. Ive written it out from memory (with some seriously low tech drawings Grin ) but it should be okay (I hope).

Materials

2 x CDR jewel cases (the skinny type)
A glue stick
A glue gun or really strong adhesive that will stick plastic to card
A ruler
Scissors
A cereal box
A pencil
Decorative paper for the cover

1.   Pull the cover and back piece of the jewel case apart. Then snap off the prongs that the cover slots into on the back piece.

2.   Measure the width of the case and multiply this by 3 and add 2.5cm to this number.

3.   Measure the length of the jewel case and add 1cm to this number.

4.   Cut down one side of the cereal box. Then cut across the box to form a  rectangle using the measurements that you just calculated.

Now heres the tricky bit

5.   Place one jewel case towards the right end of your rectangle leaving about 3mm.

6.   On the card, using the pencil mark along the left edge of the jewel case.

7.   Leaving about 7mm to the left of that line draw a parallel line. Place the right edge of the jewel case and mark along it left edge.

8.   Draw yet another line parallel to the last with a 1cm gap in between.

Fingers crossed, you should have something that looks similar to the top diagram??

9.   Using the blade of the your scissors and the ruler, score along the lines you drew.

10.   Gently fold inwards along these lines, then flatten it back out.

11.   On the back of your cover paper draw around the card, adding an 2cm to each side, then cut it out.

12.   Cut out 2 x2cm wide strips of your paper the same height as the piece of card.

13.   Using the glue stick to cover the outside of the card with the paper, folding the edges over neatly. Makes sure that it is not too taught, otherwise it might rip when the case is folded up. Place the 2 strips over lines that you scored. You might wanna place some books on top to help stick the cover paper down nicely.

It should now look like the middle diagram

14.   Gently fold the card again to locate the creases. Using the glue gun, stick the jewel casea to the areas (B+C) shown in the first diagram so that it ends up looking like the last diagram.

15.   Once the glue has dried fold up the case completely and place a book on top for about an hour or longer.

16.   Stick your tracklisting/message/whatever over area A. Add a cover labels etc.

ET VOILA!!!

Oh for the cds, I just printed out the coloured text on coloured paper then used the cd as a template to cut them out and stuck them on with the gluestick.

Hopefully some of you will give it a go. If it's too confusing, please let me know!

The decoration on the CDs themselves...are they permanent? Or do you have to take them off to play?
And ja, a tutorial would be awesome.

LOL, I was thinking exactly the same thing....
First I was looking at the closed case and thinking, "Wow, that's an awesome design and fab colours, but how in the world would a tape fit into that shape?"  I was all confused...
Then I looked at the case open and realized there weren't any tapes inside at all!  Cheesy

ANYway, i_squared_u, I like the idea of harvesting bits of old cd cases to make a new one!  Very cool.

Holy Crap.  I second the call for a tute.

I'm one of the few people in the world that is moving FROM one gigantic cd case holding all of my cds BACK TO each cd in it's original case and I'm missing SOOOOO many cases! (welll.... a lot are burns, too so I never had the case)

Anyway... it looks really great.  You have a lucky friend! even if s/he is angry.

Yes, please post a tutorial.  And are the CD labels hand made, or done with software?

Thanks guys for your really nice comments!

Yup.Yup. The more pedantic craftsters amongst you have pointed out that it is a mix-cd not a mixtape. Indeed you're right but I just like the word 'mixtape' more, artistic license and all that.

I'm currently drowning in a sea of university exam revision but I'll hopefully come up for air this weekend and post a tute.

Guilty as charged!  I also drive people crazy with my explanations of how red pandas aren't bears.  Grin (And I had to add here because it's an even better example, "how tomatoes aren't vegetables.")

Good luck on your exams and I'll look forward to hearing about how you used wallpaper...I've never tried crafting with wallpaper before.

I never got into the one-giant-cd-case.  I just couldn't figure out what benefit that would be to me.  But I'm still missing CD cases, so it's not the fault of the 20054835-cd-wallet.  I blame my own disorganization.
